Overview
EN ISO 34101-3:2019 - Sustainable and traceable cocoa, Part 3: Requirements for traceability sets out the basic requirements for designing and implementing traceability systems across the cocoa supply chain. It applies to sustainably produced cocoa beans and cocoa products that meet the ISO 34101 series (ISO 34101‑2 performance requirements together with either ISO 34101‑1 or ISO 34101‑4 Annex A/B). The standard covers traceability from the sustainably producing organization to the point of exit from the manufacturer of the final retail product and specifies administrative rules for a mass balance system. It explicitly does not apply to credit systems.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Traceability system elements and requirements - defines the structural elements a traceability system must include (roles, records, identification and flow of material).
- Documented information - requirements for creating, controlling and updating traceability records and documented procedures.
- Organizational responsibilities - assignment of responsibilities across actors in the supply chain (producers, processors, manufacturers).
- Physical traceability - approaches for identity preserved supply and cocoa segregation to maintain physical separation of sustainably produced cocoa.
- Administrative traceability / Mass balance - principles and administrative controls that permit sustainably produced cocoa to be accounted for alongside nonconforming cocoa within a manufacturing process (includes single‑site and multi‑site mass balance administration).
- Monitoring, measurement and internal audit - ongoing monitoring, data analysis and internal auditing needed to demonstrate traceability effectiveness.
- Improvement and corrective actions - procedures for handling nonconformities and continual improvement.
- Normative and informative annexes - Annex A (documentation requirements), Annex B (implementation guidance and best practices), Annex C (mass balance details).
Practical applications and who uses it
EN ISO 34101-3:2019 is intended for actors across the cocoa value chain who need to establish robust traceability for sustainable sourcing and certification:
- Cocoa farmers and producer organizations implementing sustainability management and traceability at origin.
- Processors, manufacturers and packers that mix, transform or package cocoa products and must track sustainable content to the point of exit.
- Supply chain managers and procurement teams setting supplier requirements for sustainable and traceable cocoa.
- Certification bodies and auditors assessing compliance with the ISO 34101 series.
- Retailers and brand owners documenting sustainable sourcing claims for marketing or regulatory compliance.
Practical uses include designing traceability workflows, implementing mass balance accounting, preparing documented evidence for certification, and strengthening supply chain transparency for sustainability claims.
