This document specifies the requirements and corresponding test methods for zinc dust pigments suitable for use in protective coatings.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 3549:2024 (ISO 3549:2024) - Zinc dust pigments for paints - Specifications and test methods - is a CEN-endorsed international standard that defines the required characteristics and laboratory test methods for zinc dust pigments intended for use in protective coatings. Approved February 2024, this edition supersedes the 2002/2003 versions and provides harmonized specifications for sampling, compositional analysis and quality control of zinc dust pigments used in anticorrosive paints.
Key topics and requirements
The standard covers both specifications and detailed test methods, including (section references from the document):
- Scope, terms and definitions, and required characteristics and tolerances - establishes the general requirements for pigment quality.
- Sampling - procedures for obtaining representative samples for testing.
- Physical tests - e.g., determination of residue on sieve to assess particle size distribution.
- Chemical composition and purity - test methods for:
- Total zinc content
- Metallic zinc content
- Lead, cadmium and iron content
- Arsenic content
- Chloride content
- Matter insoluble in acid
- Test reporting - requirements for documenting test results and conformity.
Note: the standard provides laboratory procedures and expression of results for each test method but does not prescribe formulation or application methods for coatings.
Practical applications and users
EN ISO 3549:2024 is intended for organizations involved in the production, procurement, testing and specification of zinc-rich pigments and protective coatings:
- Pigment manufacturers - to demonstrate compliance with international quality criteria.
- Paint and coating formulators - to select zinc dust pigments with verified zinc content and low impurities for anticorrosive performance.
- Quality control and testing laboratories - to perform standardized analyses (zinc content, heavy metals, chlorides, insolubles).
- Specifiers, procurement and regulatory bodies - to reference in technical specifications, tender documents and safety/compliance checks.
- Infrastructure and marine asset owners - when specifying zinc dust–based protective systems for steel structures, bridges, pipelines and offshore installations.
Using this standard helps ensure consistent pigment quality, minimize harmful impurities (e.g., lead, cadmium, arsenic), and support reliable corrosion protection in zinc-rich coatings.
Related standards
- EN ISO 3549:2024 is the CEN-adopted version of ISO 3549:2024 and supersedes earlier editions.
- For comprehensive specification of protective coatings, users typically refer to this standard alongside other international and regional standards on pigments, extenders and coating performance (consult national standards bodies for specific cross-references).
