Overview
EN ISO 4022:2018 / ISO 4022:2018 specifies a laboratory method to determine the fluid permeability of permeable sintered metal materials whose porosity is deliberately continuous or interconnecting. The method measures the pressure drop and volumetric flow of a test fluid through a prepared test piece and expresses permeability in terms of the viscous permeability coefficient and the inertia permeability coefficient (see Annex A). The standard was prepared by ISO/TC 119 (Powder metallurgy) and adopted by CEN as EN ISO 4022:2018.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and exclusions
- Applies to sintered metal materials with interconnected porosity.
- Does not apply to very long hollow cylindrical test pieces of small diameter where axial pressure drop is significant (see A.5).
- Test principle
- Flow a fluid of known density and viscosity through a test piece and measure pressure drop and volumetric flow rate.
- Derive viscous and inertia permeability coefficients from measured data.
- Test piece preparation
- Remove liquids (oil/grease) from pores before gas testing.
- Cleaning and extraction procedures referenced to ISO 2738; test pieces must be dried.
- Apparatus and test heads
- Describes equipment choices driven by shape and size of test pieces.
- Includes a guard ring test head for flat samples (non‑destructive partial-area testing) and provisions for hollow cylindrical samples.
- Measurements and reporting
- Requires measurement of thickness, test area, upstream/downstream pressures, flow rate, and mean temperature.
- Provides formulas and symbols (Clause 3 and 8) for calculating results and specifying final reported values.
- Annexes
- Annex A: flow behaviour through porous materials and the formula linking pressure drop, flow, viscosity and density.
- Annex B: guidance on test fluids.
Applications and who uses it
- Material and process engineers in powder metallurgy and sintered metal manufacturing who need quantitative permeability data for design, quality control and material specification.
- Manufacturers of filters, silencers, porous bearings, oil control components, and hydraulic elements where controlled permeability is critical.
- R&D and testing laboratories performing permeability characterization, certification, comparative testing and validation of sintered components.
- Buyers and specification writers who reference EN ISO 4022:2018 in procurement and material acceptance criteria.
Related standards
- ISO 2738 - referenced for determination of density, oil content and open porosity of permeable sintered metal materials.
- EN ISO 4022:2018 supersedes EN ISO 4022:2006 (European adoption without modification).
