Overview
EN ISO 4413:2010 - Hydraulic fluid power - General rules and safety requirements for systems and their components (ISO 4413:2010) - is a Type B standard that specifies the general rules and safety requirements for hydraulic fluid power systems used on machinery (as defined by ISO 12100). It addresses the significant hazards associated with hydraulic systems and defines principles to avoid those hazards during design, construction, modification and use. The standard also supports conformity with the European Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) and supersedes EN 982:1996+A1:2008.
Key topics
- Scope and application: Applies to hydraulic systems and components on machinery; covers design, construction, modification, assembly, installation, adjustment, operation, maintenance, cleaning, energy efficiency and environment.
- Hazard identification: Lists significant hazards associated with hydraulic fluid power (see Clause 4 and informative Annex A); noise is noted as incompletely addressed.
- Design and safety principles: General rules and basic requirements for engineering hydraulic systems to reduce risk in accordance with ISO 12100.
- Component and control requirements: Specific safety requirements for components, controls and manifold assemblies.
- Verification and testing: Verification of safety requirements and acceptance testing procedures (Clause 6).
- Information for use: Required documentation, final user information for stationary machinery, maintenance and operating data, marking and identification (Clause 7).
- Supporting material: Annex B contains a form for collecting hydraulic system and component data to demonstrate conformance.
Practical applications
EN ISO 4413:2010 is intended for practical use in:
- Designing and engineering hydraulic systems for industrial machinery and mobile equipment
- Specifying and selecting hydraulic components (valves, pumps, hoses, manifolds)
- Preparing installation, commissioning and acceptance test procedures
- Developing maintenance, cleaning and safety documentation for operators and service personnel
- Conducting risk assessments and ensuring compliance with machinery safety directives
Typical users include machine designers, OEMs, hydraulic system integrators, safety engineers, maintenance teams, procurement specialists and regulatory compliance officers.
Related standards
EN ISO 4413 references and aligns with several complementary standards, for example:
- ISO 12100 - Safety of machinery - Risk assessment and reduction
- ISO 5598 - Fluid power vocabulary
- ISO 1219 - Graphic symbols and circuit diagrams for fluid power
- ISO 4414 - Pneumatic systems (equivalent guidance for pneumatics)
- Other hydraulic connector and hose standards cited in the normative references
By following EN ISO 4413:2010, organizations can improve hydraulic system safety, reliability, serviceability and energy efficiency while demonstrating conformity with established international and European machine-safety requirements.
