ISO 5269-2:2004 specifies a method, using a Rapid-Köthen sheet former, for the preparation of laboratory sheets of pulp for the purpose of carrying out subsequent physical tests on these sheets in order to assess the relevant properties of the pulp itself. ISO 5269-2:2004 is applicable to most kinds of pulp. It is not suitable for some pulps with very long fibres, such as those made from unshortened cotton, flax and similar materials. This method is not suitable for the preparation of laboratory sheets for the determination of diffuse blue reflectance factor (ISO brightness) in accordance with ISO 3688.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 5269-2:2004, titled Pulps - Preparation of laboratory sheets for physical testing - Part 2: Rapid-Köthen method, is a critical international standard developed by ISO and adopted by CEN. This standard specifies the use of the Rapid-Köthen sheet former for preparing laboratory sheets from pulp suspensions. These sheets are intended for subsequent physical testing to evaluate the intrinsic properties of pulps.
The methodology described in this standard is applicable to most pulp types but excludes those with very long fibers such as unshortened cotton or flax. It ensures consistent, high-quality sheet formation which is essential for reliable pulp physical tests, excluding applications like ISO brightness determination (diffuse blue reflectance factor) covered under ISO 3688.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability EN ISO 5269-2:2004 details the preparation method tailored to laboratory sheets used for physical testing of pulps. It excludes pulps with very long fibers and does not cover sheets for brightness testing.
-
Method Principle A circular pulp sheet is formed on a fine wire screen by suction, followed by pressing and drying. The Rapid-Köthen method carefully controls suction, pressure, and temperature during drying to minimize shrinkage and ensure uniform sheet quality.
-
Essential Equipment
- Rapid-Köthen Apparatus: Includes the stock container, sheet former, suction chamber, dryer, and transfer equipment like couch rolls and carrier boards.
- Sheet Former: Features a transparent cylindrical stock container with holes to distribute pulp evenly, a wire screen for sheet formation, and a suction chamber connected to a regulated vacuum pump.
- Dryer Unit: Comprises a heating chamber and steam chamber with rubber diaphragm for even heat and pressure application, supported by precision screens that maintain sheet integrity during drying.
-
Sample Preparation and Procedure The standard provides detailed instructions for pulp pretreatment, suspension preparation, sheet forming on the wire screen under suction, transfer of wet sheets to drying carriers, and controlled drying with specific temperature and pressure parameters.
-
Reporting Test reports should document all relevant parameters including pulp type, sample preparation, environmental conditions, and forming/drying steps to ensure reproducibility and traceability.
Applications
EN ISO 5269-2:2004 supports quality control and research in pulp and paper manufacturing by standardizing laboratory sheet preparation. This standard benefits:
- Pulp Testing Laboratories: Ensures consistent sheet formation for physical property analysis such as strength, thickness, porosity, and density.
- Pulp and Paper Manufacturers: Facilitates process optimization by reliably assessing physical characteristics of pulps produced under various conditions.
- Research and Development: Provides a controlled method to prepare test sheets for developing new pulping techniques or fiber modifications.
- Quality Assurance Protocols: Helps maintain international consistency across laboratories performing physical tests on pulp sheets.
Related Standards
- ISO 5269-1: Specifies the Conventional Sheet-Former method for laboratory sheet preparation.
- ISO 3688: Defines methods for determination of diffuse blue reflectance factor or ISO brightness.
- ISO 5264-2: Relates to the PFI mill method of laboratory beating, recommended in conjunction with the Rapid-Köthen sheet forming method.
- ISO 187: Describes the standard atmosphere for conditioning pulp samples during testing to ensure consistent humidity and temperature.
Practical Value
Using EN ISO 5269-2:2004 offers practical advantages:
- Repeatable Results: Controlled drying and forming reduce variability, improving test data quality.
- Versatility: Applicable to most pulp types, making it a valuable tool across diverse pulp production scenarios.
- Compatibility: Recommended pairing with standardized pulp beating methods enhances overall testing consistency.
- International Acceptance: As a CEN and ISO standard, it provides harmonized guidelines supporting global trade and compliance.
By following this standard, laboratories and manufacturers can ensure their pulp testing practices meet internationally recognized protocols, improving product quality assessments and aiding in innovations in pulp technology.
