Overview
EN ISO 5467-1:2022 / ISO 5467-1:2022 specifies general requirements and test methods for mobile dental units and mobile dental patient chairs intended for use in permanent healthcare facilities - whether electrically powered or not. The standard covers safety, performance, documentation, marking and packaging and is part of the ISO 5467 series. It excludes operator’s stools, stationary dental equipment, other types of mobile dental equipment, portable dental equipment and operating lights.
Key topics and requirements
The standard structures requirements across functional, mechanical and electrical areas and sets out test and documentation obligations:
- Scope & definitions
- Defines mobile dental unit (provides utilities such as compressed air, water, suction, electrical supply, controls, tray supports, cuspidor) and mobile dental patient chair (supports and positions the patient).
- General requirements (Clause 5.1)
- Basic safety and essential performance
- Controls and indicators, function stop systems and usability
- Cleaning, disinfection and biocompatibility considerations
- Requirements for upholstery, solids filters and amalgam separator devices
- Air, water, suction and wastewater system considerations (see ISO 5467-2 for detailed utilities)
- Mechanical requirements (Clause 5.2)
- Stability, tipping resistance, locking in position, dimensional requirements, impact and rough‑handling considerations
- Electrical requirements (Clause 5.3)
- General electrical safety and provision of test points for periodic safety checks
- Testing and conformity
- Visual inspection, tipping and stability tests, impact testing and a requirement for a test report (Clauses 7 and 5.4)
- Documentation
- Instructions for use (Clause 8), technical description (Clause 9), marking (Clause 10) and packaging (Clause 11)
- Informative annex
- Example test report (Annex A)
Applications and who uses it
EN ISO 5467-1:2022 is useful for:
- Manufacturers and designers of mobile dental units and patient chairs to ensure product safety and regulatory compliance
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors conducting stability, mechanical and electrical tests
- Purchasing and procurement teams in dental clinics and healthcare facilities evaluating equipment specifications
- Regulators and standards committees aligning national rules with international requirements
- Service and maintenance providers using specified test points and documentation for periodic safety checks
