The function of an industrial radiographic illuminator is to provide sufficient diffuse light for viewing of developed radiographic films (radiographs). This document specifies the minimum requirements for industrial radiographic illuminators used for viewing radiographs.

EN ISO 5580:2023 - "Non‑destructive testing - Industrial radiographic illuminators - Minimum requirements" defines the minimum design, performance and marking requirements for industrial radiographic illuminators used to view developed radiographic films (radiographs). It specifies physical construction, viewing‑screen properties, luminance, light colour, diffusion and uniformity, safety features (anti‑glare, heating protection) and measurement methods. This EN-adopted ISO standard is essential for consistent, safe and repeatable radiographic film viewing in NDT (non‑destructive testing).

- D = 3.0 → Lmin ≈ 10 000 cd/m² (and higher for denser films up to 1 000 000 cd/m² for D = 5.0)
- Note: very high luminance (>300 000 cd/m²) can heat films and should be used only for short periods.
- Colour of light: Normal white light with correlated colour temperature (CCT) between 2 500 K and 7 000 K; film‑specific colours allowed if recommended by the film manufacturer.
- Diffusion and uniformity: Diffusion factor σ' > 0.7; uniformity factor g > 0.5 to ensure even illumination and viewing comfort.
- Safety features: Anti‑glare device to protect operators when films are removed; mechanical/electrical safety to conform with national electrics standards; protections against liquid ingress for wet-film viewing when required.
- Measurement & marking: Characteristics and nominal power consumption shall be determinable; marking and user recommendations included.

- Intended for NDT/radiography labs, welding inspection, foundries, petrochemical/aviation maintenance, and any facility performing film‑based radiographic testing.
