Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 6042:2000 (ISO 6042:1998) specifies requirements for weathertight single-leaf steel doors used in ships and marine technology. The standard defines main dimensions, materials, manufacturing quality and testing for single‑leaf steel doors to ensure interchangeability and compliance with shipboard use (including consideration of the International Convention on Load Lines 1966 - LLC66). Annex A gives recommended bulkhead opening dimensions.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Door types and frames: Defines door types AB, FB, and FBR and their associated frame and plate constructions (angle-bar or flat‑bar frames).
- Nominal sizes: Lists standard door sizes (L × B) such as 1200×600, 1400×600, 1400×750, 1400×900, 1600×600, 1600×750, 1600×900 and specifies application to LLC66 positions 1 or 2.
- Fittings and hardware:
- Location and number of clips (four- or six‑clip designs depending on size) and recommended wedge arrangement (slope ~1:12) to align with clips.
- Two hinges per door with oval eye holes to permit uniform compression.
- Door‑seal retaining bar may be vertical or inclined.
- Seals: Specifies cross‑section and installation of resilient door seals; includes a minimum compressed‑thickness stop (cannot be compressed below 16 mm) and bonding details for marine conditions.
- Materials: Door plates, frames, retaining bars, clips, wedges and hinges made from weldable steel with a minimum tensile strength of 340 N/mm (hinge pins from corrosion‑resistant material at 350 N/mm as given in the standard).
- Quality of manufacture: Plate and frame flatness, removal of scale, priming to inhibit corrosion, and smooth edges to prevent injury.
- Testing: Completed installed doors must be tested for weathertightness (hose test or equivalent) to the satisfaction of the regulatory authority.
- Designation: Standardized naming format - e.g., Door ISO 6042 – FBR – 1400 · 750.
Applications and users
This standard is intended for:
- Shipbuilders and naval architects specifying weathertight marine doors for bulkheads and external openings.
- Manufacturers of marine doors and hardware ensuring interchangeability and compliance with ship rules.
- Ship surveyors and regulatory bodies verifying installation, materials and weathertightness testing.
- Ship operators and maintenance teams selecting replacement doors or performing retrofits where compliance with LLC66 and International Standards is required.
Related standards
- Normative reference: ISO 3796:1976 (clear openings through frames for external single‑leaf doors).
- Users should also ensure compliance with applicable statutory rules, classification society requirements and LLC66 provisions when applying ISO 6042.
