This part of ISO 6185 specifies the minimum safety characteristics required for the design, materials to use, manufacture and testing of inflatable boats (including rigid inflatable boats) less than 8 m in overall length with a minimum buoyancy of 1 800 N. This part of ISO 6185 is applicable to the following types of inflatable boats intended for use within the operating temperatures of – 5 C to + 60 C: Type I: Inflatable boats propelled exclusively by manual means; Type II: Inflatable boats capable of taking a maximum motor power of 4,5 kW; Type III: Inflatable canoes and kayaks (see normative annex A); Type IV: Inflatable craft propelled by sail with a maximum sail area of 6 m2 (see normative annex B). NOTE 1 General arrangements of typical boats of Types I, II and III are given in annexes C, D and E, respectively. NOTE 2 For boats with power ratings of 4,5 kW and greater, refer to ISO 6185-2 and ISO 6185-3. This part of ISO 6185 excludes single-chambered boats and is not applicable to aquatic toys and inflatable liferafts.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 6185-1:2018 - Inflatable boats, Part 1 - covers inflatable boats designed for a maximum motor power of 4.5 kW. Adopted by CEN from ISO 6185-1:2001, this European Standard provides requirements and test methods to ensure safety, durability and conformity with relevant EU legislation (notably Directive 2013/53/EU where applicable). It applies to small craft (ICS 47.080) and is intended as a harmonized reference for manufacturers, test houses and national bodies.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard addresses both design and verification aspects of inflatable boats, including:
- Materials
- Requirements and test methods for reinforced fabrics, unsupported materials, wood, metals and GRP components.
- Functional components
- Conditioning and testing of hull fittings, valves (inflation/deflation), rowlocks and oars, transoms, hull drainage, seating, towing devices and lifting/carrying handles.
- Safety of the completed boat
- Determination of maximum permissible number of persons, maximum motor power (4.5 kW), static stability, maximum load capacity, design working pressures and hull strength.
- Tests for stability, flooding, flotation and strength of assemblies (rudder, steering, towing points).
- Documentation & marking
- Test methods
- Defined procedures for material testing, strength and abrasion tests, stability and load testing, and component function verification.
Applications and who uses it
EN ISO 6185-1:2018 is used by:
- Inflatable boat manufacturers and designers for product development and to demonstrate regulatory compliance.
- Test laboratories and certifiers to perform standardized tests on materials, components and completed boats.
- Importers, retailers and technical assessors to verify safety claims and conformity with EU requirements.
- Maritime authorities and notified bodies when assessing market entry and conformity to Directive 2013/53/EU.
- Professional end-users (rental operators, training schools) who need to ensure safe operation and correct labeling.
Practical benefits include improved product safety, consistent quality control, clear marking and documentation, and a presumption of conformity with essential EU requirements when cited in the Official Journal.
