ISO 6360-6:2004 specifies the code numbers for specific characteristics of rotary abrasive instruments used in dentistry. This three-digit number forms the fourth group of three digits in the 15-digit overall number, the principles of which are explained in ISO 6360-1 and ISO 6360-2. ISO 6360-6:2004 is also applicable to dental polishers which are considered as abrasive instruments. NOTE In addition to terms for rotary instruments and accessories used in two of the three official ISO languages (English, French and Russian), ISO 6360-6:2004 gives the equivalent terms in the German language; these are published under the responsibility of the member body for Germany (DIN). However, only the terms given in the official languages can be considered as ISO terms.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 6360-6:2004 is a European and international standard that specifies a number coding system for specific characteristics of rotary abrasive instruments used in dentistry. As part of the ISO 6360 series, it focuses on the three-digit code identifying the abrasive properties embedded in the overall 15-digit code for dental rotary instruments. This standard is essential for dental manufacturers, suppliers, and professionals aiming for consistent classification and easy identification of abrasive rotary instruments, including dental polishers.
The standard was developed by ISO/TC 106 (Dentistry) in collaboration with CEN/TC 55 and is widely adopted across European countries to foster harmonization in the dental sector.
Key Topics
-
Specific Characteristics Coding EN ISO 6360-6 defines a three-digit code group (positions 10 to 12 in the 15-digit number) that describes abrasiveness features such as:
- Fineness of grit size
- Hardness of the abrasive material's binding
-
Grit Sizes Classification Abrasive instruments are categorized by grit size into six main groups:
- Ultra-fine
- Extra-fine
- Fine
- Medium
- Coarse
- Very coarse
-
Binding Hardness Levels Each grit size group is further divided by the hardness of the binding, which can be:
- Very soft
- Soft
- Medium
- Hard
- Very hard
- Extra hard
-
Code Number Assignment Each combination of grit size and binding hardness corresponds to a specific three-digit code, enabling precise identification and classification.
-
Application to Dental Polishers The standard includes dental polishers as a subset of abrasive instruments, extending the coding system’s applicability.
-
Multilingual Terminology Provides equivalent terms in English, French, Russian (official ISO languages), and German to facilitate international usage and understanding.
Applications
-
Manufacturers and Suppliers Enables consistent cataloguing and identification of abrasive rotary instruments globally, promoting interoperability and clear communication in product specifications.
-
Dental Professionals Helps dentists and dental technicians quickly identify instrument characteristics, assisting in instrument selection for procedures requiring specific abrasiveness.
-
Regulatory and Quality Compliance Facilitates regulatory compliance by standardizing classification, improving quality assurance, and enabling traceability in dental instrument production and distribution.
-
Inventory and Order Management Streamlines inventory coding and ordering systems for dental product distributors and clinics with a universal method for describing abrasive instrument properties.
Related Standards
EN ISO 6360-6 is part of the broader ISO 6360 series, which provides a comprehensive coding system for rotary dental instruments:
-
ISO 6360-1: General Characteristics Covers base coding principles and the first two groups of digits identifying materials and overall instrument features.
-
ISO 6360-2: Shapes Specifies the third group of digits relating to the shape of rotary instruments.
-
ISO 6360-3: Burs and Cutters Details codes specific to burs and cutting instruments.
-
ISO 6360-4: Diamond Instruments Includes coding for diamond instrument characteristics, with additional grit size designation and color codes.
-
ISO 6360-7: Mandrels and Special Instruments Covers specific codes for mandrels and other specialized rotary instruments.
Additionally, ISO 7711-3 complements this standard by providing defined grit size designations and color codes specifically for diamond rotary instruments.
EN ISO 6360-6:2004 plays a vital role in the dental industry’s ability to classify abrasive rotary instruments consistently and precisely. By defining a universal coding system based on grit size and binding hardness, the standard facilitates better communication, regulation, and application of dental rotary abrasive tools worldwide.
