ISO 683-2:2016 specifies the technical delivery requirements for - semi-finished products, hot formed, e.g. blooms, billets, slabs (see Note 1), - bars (see Note 1), - wire rod, finished flat products, and - hammer or drop forgings (see Note 1) manufactured from the direct hardening alloy steels and the alloy flame- and induction-hardening steels listed in Table 3 and supplied in one of the heat-treatment conditions given for the different types of products in Table 1 and in one of the surface conditions given in Table 2. The steels are, in general, intended for the manufacture of quenched and tempered or austempered (see 3.2 and Note 2) and flame- or induction-hardened machine parts (see Tables 8 and 9). The requirements for mechanical properties given in ISO 683-2:2016 are restricted to the sizes given in the relevant Table 8. NOTE 1 Hammer-forged semi-finished products (blooms, billets, slabs, etc.), seamless rolled rings and hammer-forged bars are in the following covered under semi-finished products or bars and not under the term "hammer and drop forgings". NOTE 2 For the purposes of simplification, the term "quenched and tempered" is, unless otherwise indicated, used in the following also for the austempered condition. NOTE 3 For International Standards relating to steels complying with the requirements for the chemical composition in Table 3, however, supplied in other product forms or treatment conditions than given above or intended for special applications, and for other related International Standards, see the Bibliography. NOTE 4 ISO 683-2 :2016 does not apply to bright products and bars and wire rod for cold heading. For such products, see ISO 683‑18 and ISO 4954. In special cases, variations in these technical delivery requirements or additions to them can form the subject of an agreement at the time of enquiry and order (see 5.2 and Annex B). In addition to ISO 683-2:2016, the general technical delivery requirements of ISO 404 are applicable.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 683-2:2018 (adoption of ISO 683-2:2016) specifies the technical delivery requirements for a range of heat‑treatable alloy steels for quenching and tempering. Published by CEN, this part of ISO 683 covers semi‑finished products (blooms, billets, slabs), bars, wire rod, finished flat products and hammer/drop forgings manufactured from the alloy steels listed in the standard. The steels are generally intended for manufacture of quenched and tempered or austempered, and flame‑ or induction‑hardened machine parts. The document sets requirements for chemical composition, mechanical properties (within the sizes given in the standard), surface and heat‑treatment conditions, inspection and testing, and marking.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope of products: semi‑finished products, bars, wire rod, finished flat products, hammer/drop forgings (with specific exclusions for bright products and cold‑heading stock).
- Heat‑treatment and surface conditions: defined delivery conditions (see Tables 1 and 2 in the standard) for tempering, hardening and surface treatment.
- Chemical composition and mechanical properties: requirements tied to the alloy steels listed (Table 3) and to mechanical property ruling sections (Table 8); sizes for which mechanical properties apply are specified.
- Hardenability and hardness: verification procedures for hardenability and surface hardness; testing methods and sample locations are described.
- Inspection and testing: chemical analysis, tensile and impact testing, hardness tests, non‑destructive testing and frequency of testing; test documentation per EN/ISO practices.
- Traceability, marking and documentation: cast traceability, marking rules and inspection certificates (e.g., EN 10204).
- Options and special requirements: purchaser/supplier agreements can modify delivery requirements (see Annex B).
- Normative and informative annexes: designation cross‑references, applicable dimensional standards and bibliographic references.
Applications
EN ISO 683-2:2018 is used to specify and supply alloy steels intended for components that require controlled quenching and tempering or induction/flame hardening, such as machine parts requiring high strength, wear resistance and predictable mechanical performance. Typical uses include shafts, gears, forged components and other engineered parts subjected to heat treatment.
Who should use this standard
- Steel manufacturers and mills for product specification and delivery
- Heat‑treatment and forging shops for acceptance and processing criteria
- OEMs and procurement teams writing material specifications
- Quality, inspection and testing laboratories ensuring compliance
- Design and materials engineers selecting steels for quenched/tempered parts
