ISO 683-5:2017 gives the technical delivery requirements for - semi-finished products, e.g. blooms, billets, slabs (see note 1), - bars (see note 1), - wire rod, - hot-rolled plates (see note 2), and - hammer or drop forgings (see note 1) manufactured from the nitriding steels listed in Table 3 and supplied in one of the heat-treatment conditions given for the different types of products in Table 1, rows 2 to 5, and in one of the surface conditions given in Table 2. The steels are generally intended for the fabrication of quenched and tempered and, subsequently, nitriding machine parts. The requirements for mechanical properties given in this document are restricted to the sizes given in Table 6. NOTE 1 Hammer-forged semi-finished products (blooms, billets, slabs, etc.), seamless rolled rings and hammer-forged bars are in the following covered under semi-finished products or bars and not under the term "hammer and drop forgings". NOTE 2 The term "plate" includes in the following also wide flats unless otherwise stated. In special cases, variations in these technical delivery requirements or additions to these requirements can form the subject of an agreement at the time of enquiry and order (see 5.2 and Annex B). In addition to this document, the general technical delivery requirements of ISO 404 are applicable.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 683-5:2021 (adopting ISO 683-5:2017) specifies the technical delivery requirements for nitriding steels. It covers semi‑finished products (blooms, billets, slabs), bars, wire rod, hot‑rolled plates (including wide flats), and hammer/drop forgings manufactured from the nitriding steels listed in the standard. The steels are generally intended for fabrication of quenched‑and‑tempered, subsequently nitrided machine parts. The document is published by CEN and aligns with the international ISO text.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope of products: semi‑finished products, bars, wire rod, hot‑rolled plates and forgings supplied in specified heat‑treatment and surface conditions (see Tables 1–3 in the standard).
- Heat‑treatment & surface condition: defined delivery conditions (normal and particular) for different product types; traceability of cast and heat treatment requirements.
- Chemical composition and mechanical properties: mandatory chemical analyses and mechanical property limits for specified sizes (sizes referenced in Table 6).
- Hardness & machinability: hardness verification, machinability guidance and limits applicable to nitriding steels.
- Quality attributes: rules on grain size, non‑metallic inclusions (microscopic and macroscopic), internal soundness, decarburization, and surface quality.
- Inspection and testing: prescribed test methods for chemical analysis, hardness, mechanical tests and impact tests, frequency of testing and conformity documents (inspection certificates).
- Marking and documentation: marking, ordering information (mandatory purchaser information and options), and examples for ordering.
- Flexibility by agreement: special or supplementary requirements may be agreed at enquiry/order stage (see Clause 5.2 and Annex B).
- Normative and informative annexes: include ruling sections for mechanical properties, supplementary requirements, cross‑references to European steel numbers and applicable dimensional standards.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: steel producers, raw material suppliers, heat‑treatment shops, forging and rolling mills, OEMs, procurement and quality engineers, metallurgists, and testing laboratories.
- Practical value:
- Ensures consistent material quality and traceability for components intended for nitriding.
- Supports correct material selection for manufacturing nitrided machine parts (shafts, gears, fasteners, tool holders).
- Facilitates procurement and inspection by defining test methods, delivery conditions and acceptance criteria.
- Reduces risk of performance issues related to decarburization, inclusions or improper heat treatment.
