This document specifies a general method of test for determining the water-soluble nitrates in a sample of pigments by a spectrophotometric method using salicylic acid. ISO 787-13 specifies a method for determining the water-soluble nitrates in a sample of pigments using Nessler`s method.

Overview - EN ISO 787-19:2020 (Salicylic acid method)
EN ISO 787-19:2020 specifies a spectrophotometric method for the determination of water‑soluble nitrates in pigment samples using the salicylic acid nitration reaction. The nitrate in an aqueous extract nitrates salicylic (or sodium salicylate) in a sulphuric acid medium to form a yellow nitro‑compound. After alkalinization the colour intensity is measured at 410 nm and related to nitrate mass via a calibration graph. The standard is intended for routine pigment quality control and laboratory testing.
