This document specifies a method for the calculation of the lower explosion limit of a coating powder, i.e. the minimum concentration of the coating powder in air which will form an explosive mixture. It is based on the measurement of the gross calorific value of the product, as determined by the method described in ISO 1928.
Abstract
Overview - EN ISO 8130-4:2022 (Coating powders, Part 4)
EN ISO 8130-4:2022 specifies a method to calculate the lower explosion limit (LEL) of coating powders - the minimum concentration of powder in air that can form an explosive mixture. The method is based on the product’s gross calorific value (H) determined using ISO 1928, or estimated by summing the calorific values of individual combustible constituents. Results are expressed in grams per cubic metre (g·m⁻³) and reported to the nearest whole number.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definition: Clarifies LEL for coating powders and introduces short‑term LEL terminology for coating applications.
- Measurement basis: Uses the gross calorific value (heat of combustion per gram) as the fundamental parameter for calculation.
- Calculation method: A mathematical formula (with defined constants) combines H with specified constants to generate the LEL in g·m⁻³. The standard also provides an estimation route by summating constituent calorific values when direct measurement is not available.
- Sampling and test conditions: Representative sampling is required in accordance with ISO 15528; calorific measurements follow ISO 1928 procedures.
- Assumptions and limitations: The calculation assumes powdered dispersion, complete combustion, adiabatic reaction behavior and a reference flame temperature (as noted in the standard). Users are advised that the calculation is an estimation compared with direct experimental methods.
- Test report requirements: Reports must identify the product, reference the standard, present LEL results, state whether the value was calculated or estimated, record deviations or anomalies, and include the test date.
Applications and who uses it
- Powder coating manufacturers use the method for safety data, formulation screening and internal risk assessments.
- Process and safety engineers apply LEL values to design ventilation, dust-control systems and explosion-mitigation measures in coating application plants.
- Quality assurance and test laboratories use the procedure to document product hazards and compliance.
- Regulatory bodies and risk assessors rely on LEL data for workplace safety evaluations, classification and emergency preparedness.
- Useful for operations where direct explosion testing is impractical or when a quick, repeatable LEL estimate is required.
