This document specifies the apparatus, the reagents and the procedure to be used in conducting the neutral salt spray (NSS), acetic acid salt spray (AASS) and copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray (CASS) tests for assessment of the corrosion resistance of metallic materials, with or without permanent or temporary corrosion protection. It also describes the method employed to evaluate the corrosivity of the test cabinet environment. It does not specify the dimensions or types of test specimens, the exposure period to be used for a particular product, or the interpretation of results. Such details are provided in the appropriate product specifications. The salt spray tests are particularly useful for detecting discontinuities, such as pores and other defects, in certain metallic, organic, anodic oxide and conversion coatings. The NSS test is particularly applicable to: — metals and their alloys; — metallic coatings (anodic and cathodic); — conversion coatings; — anodic oxide coatings; — organic coatings on metallic materials. The AASS test is especially useful for testing decorative coatings of copper + nickel + chromium, or nickel + chromium. It has also been found suitable for testing anodic and organic coatings on aluminium. The CASS test is useful for testing decorative coatings of copper + nickel + chromium, or nickel + chromium. It has also been found suitable for testing anodic and organic coatings on aluminium. The salt spray methods are all suitable for checking that the quality of a metallic material, with or without corrosion protection, is maintained. They are not intended to be used for comparative testing as a means of ranking different materials relative to each other with respect to corrosion resistance or as means of predicting long-term corrosion resistance of the tested material.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 9227:2022 - Corrosion tests in artificial atmospheres: Salt spray tests specifies standardized methods for performing neutral salt spray (NSS), acetic acid salt spray (AASS) and copper‑accelerated acetic acid salt spray (CASS) tests. Published by CEN and aligned with ISO 9227:2022, the standard defines the required apparatus, reagents and procedures used to assess corrosion resistance of metallic materials with or without temporary or permanent corrosion protection. It also describes how to evaluate the corrosivity of the salt spray cabinet environment using reference specimens.
EN ISO 9227:2022 is intended for quality control and detection of coating discontinuities (pores, defects). It does not prescribe specimen dimensions, exposure periods or result interpretation for specific products - those are provided in product specifications.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test methods covered: Neutral Salt Spray (NSS), Acetic Acid Salt Spray (AASS), Copper‑Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray (CASS).
- Test solutions: Preparation and pH adjustment of sodium chloride solutions; specific procedures for NSS, AASS and CASS, including filtration and use of diluted acetic acid.
- Apparatus requirements: Design and operation of spray cabinets, heaters/temperature control, spraying devices, collecting devices and component protection.
- Cabinet evaluation: Procedures and reference specimens to determine cabinet corrosivity and ensure reproducible test conditions.
- Specimen arrangement and handling: Guidance on arranging test and reference specimens, post‑test treatment for metallic/inorganic and organic coatings, and scribed vs. unscribed specimens.
- Test controls and reporting: Operating conditions, test duration, result evaluation and required test report content.
- Limitations: The standard explicitly states salt spray tests are not suitable for ranking different substrate types or predicting long‑term field corrosion performance.
Practical applications
- Quality control of metallic substrates, metallic coatings (anodic/cathodic), conversion and anodic oxide coatings, and organic coatings on metals.
- Rapid screening for coating defects (pores, pinholes) and production consistency checks.
- Specific use cases: testing decorative Cu/Ni/Cr or Ni/Cr coatings and anodized or organic coatings on aluminium (AASS/CASS particularly relevant).
- Useful in R&D for comparative testing of the same substrate/coating system under controlled accelerated conditions.
