ISO 9241-304:2008 provides guidance for assessing the visual ergonomics of display technologies with user performance test methods (as opposed to the optical test methods given in ISO 9241-305). Its use will help to ensure that, for a given context of use, a display meets minimum visual ergonomics requirements. It covers only visual attributes and does not address the ergonomics or usability of the whole product that houses a visual display. The main users of ISO 9241-304:2008 will be those who procure displays or who need to measure display performance during product development. Its application assumes a background in behavioural science.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 9241-304:2008 - "Ergonomics of human-system interaction - Part 304: User performance test methods for electronic visual displays" provides guidance for assessing the visual ergonomics of displays using user performance test methods. Unlike optical laboratory tests (see ISO 9241-305), this standard uses representative users, tasks and measured performance/judgment to evaluate whether a display meets minimum visual ergonomics requirements for a defined context of use. It covers only visual attributes of displays (colour or monochrome) and does not address the ergonomics or usability of the whole device that houses the display.
Key topics and requirements
- User-centred test approach: Emphasises measuring actual user performance and subjective judgement rather than only physical/optical metrics.
- Scope of application: Applies to displays attached to systems including desktop/portable computers, mobile phones, PDAs, digital cameras and consumer electronics (in-car displays, printers, microwave ovens).
- Test objective specification: Requirements for defining criterion descriptions, measurement methods and performance criteria that match the intended context of use.
- Test procedure definition: Guidance on designing repeatable test procedures - including tasks focused on handling and processing text (the Clause 8 method is text-specific).
- Participant and display selection: Guidance on selecting representative users and display samples for realistic evaluation.
- Test setup and dependent measures: Direction on controlled test environments, dependent variables (performance, comfort, subjective ratings) and data collection.
- Statistical analysis and conformance: Advice on statistical treatment of results and establishing conformance to specified visual ergonomics criteria.
- Limitations: Does not prescribe a single generic test suitable for all technologies; does not measure isolated perceptual attributes (e.g., luminance contrast or flicker) in isolation.
Practical applications and users
Who uses ISO 9241-304:2008:
- Procurement teams specifying display requirements for a target user population and context of use.
- Product developers and UX/ergonomics engineers measuring display performance during development and validation.
- Human factors and behavioural scientists designing user studies to evaluate visual display quality.
Practical uses:
- Verifying that a display supports efficient, accurate text handling in its intended environment.
- Complementing optical lab tests (ISO 9241-305) with user-centred performance data.
- Informing acceptance criteria for display procurement or product release decisions.
