Overview
EN ISO 9443:2018 - Surface quality classes for hot-rolled bars and wire rod defines technical delivery requirements for the surface quality of hot-rolled steel bars and wire rod. It covers round bars, squares, hexagons and wire rod with nominal dimensions from 5 mm to 200 mm. The standard applies to steels for engineering and structural applications and - by agreement - to bright products, tool steels and other special profiles. It does not specify limits for surface decarburization depth (see ISO 3887).
Key topics and requirements
- Surface quality classes: A, B, C, D and E are defined to characterise allowable surface discontinuities. (Numeric limits and default acceptance percentages are given in the standard’s Table 1.)
- Ordering and designation: Purchasers and manufacturers must agree the surface class, the maximum admissible portion of defective material (portion z) and the verification/sampling method. Example designation: “Surface quality ISO 9443 – class C – z 0,5”.
- Definitions: Terms such as delivery lot, discontinuity, imperfection and defect are standardised to ensure consistent interpretation.
- Testing and inspection:
- Detection methods: visual inspection, magnetic particle/flux methods, eddy current, dye penetrant and technological tests (e.g., hot-upsetting, cold compression).
- Depth measurement: magnetic flux probes, inductive methods, potential probe (DC) and ultrasonic testing for approximate depths.
- Dispute resolution: exact depth determination must be by metallographic examination on specimens cut from the product (measured radially).
- Manufacturer responsibility: producers supervise production to meet specified surface quality; purchasers may perform independent checks.
- Repair and handling: procedures for repairs and handling defective material should be agreed at the time of enquiry and order.
Practical applications
- Ensures consistent surface quality for hot-rolled bars and wire rod used in mechanical parts, structural components, fasteners and tool-making.
- Helps procurement teams specify acceptable surface condition and acceptance criteria in contracts and purchase orders.
- Guides quality assurance and inspection teams on appropriate detection and measurement methods for surface discontinuities.
- Useful in supplier audits, acceptance testing, failure analysis and traceability of delivered lots.
Who should use this standard
