IEC 60317-28:2013 specifies the requirements of enamelled rectangular copper winding wire of class 180 with a sole coating based on polyesterimide resin, which may be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. NOTE - A modified resin is a resin that has undergone a chemical change, or contains one or more additives to enhance certain performance or application characteristics. The range of nominal conductor dimensions covered by this standard is: - width: min. 2,0 mm max. 16,0 mm; - thickness: min. 0,80 mm max. 5,60 mm. Wires of grade 1 and grade 2 are included in this specification and apply to the complete range of conductors. The specified combinations of width and thickness as well as the specified width/thickness ratio are given in IEC 60317-0-2:2013. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1990, Amendment 1:1997 and Amendment 2:2007. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - new subclause containing general notes on winding wire, formerly a part of the scope; - revision to references to IEC 60317-0-2:2013 to clarify that their application is normative; - new 3.3, Appearance; - deletion of Clause 22, High temperature failure; - modification to Clause 23, Pin hole test. Keywords: requirements of enamelled rectangular copper winding wire, class 180, sole coating based on polyesterimide resin This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60317-0-2:2013.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-28:2013 (consolidated with Amendment 1) defines the requirements of enamelled rectangular copper winding wire, class 180, with a sole coating based on polyesterimide resin. It covers the physical, electrical and thermal requirements for polyesterimide enamelled rectangular copper wire used in electrical windings. The standard applies to wires with nominal conductor dimensions of width 2.0–16.0 mm and thickness 0.80–5.60 mm, and includes both grade 1 and grade 2 wires. Modified polyesterimide resins are permitted only if they retain the chemical identity of the original resin and meet all specified wire requirements.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Thermal class and indices
- Minimum temperature index: 180 (Class 180).
- Minimum heat shock temperature: 200 °C.
- Dimensions and grades
- Nominal conductor width: 2.0 mm to 16.0 mm.
- Nominal thickness: 0.80 mm to 5.60 mm.
- Wire grades 1 and 2 are covered for the full range.
- Coating
- Sole coating based on polyesterimide resin; modifications allowed only if chemical identity is retained and all requirements met.
- Mechanical and electrical tests referenced
- Dimensional tolerances, electrical resistance, elongation, springiness, flexibility and adherence, heat shock and cut-through follow clauses in IEC 60317-0-2.
- Breakdown voltage testing at an elevated temperature of 180 °C.
- Several tests are designated “test inappropriate” for this wire type (e.g., resistance to abrasion, continuity of insulation, solderability, etc.) as specified in the document.
- Packaging
- Packaging requirements reference Clause 30 of IEC 60317-0-2.
- Normative interplay
- IEC 60317-28 is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60317-0-2 (general requirements) and uses IEC 60851 test-method references where applicable.
Applications and users
Practical uses arise wherever polyesterimide enamelled rectangular copper wire is required for durable, high-temperature winding insulation:
- Manufacturers of winding wire and enamelled rectangular copper conductors
- Designers and manufacturers of motors, transformers, inductors and other wound electrical equipment requiring Class 180 insulation
- Test laboratories, quality assurance and procurement departments specifying insulation and thermal performance
- Certification bodies and component suppliers working to IEC winding-wire specifications
