IEC 60335-2-78:2021 deals with the safety of outdoor barbecues for household and similar use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V. Appliances not intended for normal household use but that nevertheless can be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, restaurants, hotels, in light industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard. As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general, it does not take into account - persons (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction; - children playing with the appliance. Attention is drawn to the fact that - for appliances intended to be used on board ships, additional requirements may be necessary; - in many countries, additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour and similar authorities. This standard does not apply to - barbecues for indoor use (IEC 60335-2-9); - appliances intended to burn charcoal or similar combustible fuels; - appliances intended exclusively for industrial purposes; - appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas); - battery-operated appliances. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2002, Amendment 1: 2008 and Amendment 2:2019. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) the text is aligned with IEC 60335-1:2020; b) some notes have been converted to normative text (Clause 1, 5.2, 15.101, 22.102); c) requirements for communal use barbecues have been added (Clause 3, 7.1, 22.103, 22.104); d) exclusion of battery-operated appliances (Clause 1); e) clarification of the need for an RCD is added (7.12). This part 2 is to be used in conjunction with the latest edition of IEC 60335-1 and its amendments unless that edition precludes it; in that case, the latest edition that does not preclude it is used. It was established on the basis of the sixth edition (2020) of that standard.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60335-2-78:2021 (consolidated with Amendment 1, 2025) is the international safety standard that specifies particular requirements for outdoor barbecues intended for household and similar use with a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V. It is a Part 2 product-family standard that supplements IEC 60335-1 and addresses common electrical, mechanical, thermal and fire hazards encountered in and around the home when using powered outdoor barbecues. The third edition (2021) with Amendment 1 (2025) aligns the text with IEC 60335-1:2020 and introduces new requirements for communal-use barbecues and clarifies the need for an RCD. Battery-operated barbecues, charcoal-only appliances and certain industrial or special-environment appliances are excluded.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & exclusions: Applies to electrical outdoor barbecues ≤250 V; excludes indoor barbecues (see IEC 60335-2-9), charcoal-only units, battery-operated appliances and equipment for corrosive/explosive atmospheres.
- Reference to IEC 60335-1: This Part 2 is to be used together with the latest applicable edition of IEC 60335-1; Part 1 provides the general safety framework.
- Design and construction: Requirements for stability, mechanical strength, protection against access to live parts, clearances and creepage, and resistance to heat, fire and rusting.
- Electrical safety and testing: Clauses cover leakage current, electric strength, transient overvoltages, moisture resistance, overload protection and endurance testing.
- Marking and instructions: Mandatory labeling and user information, including warnings and safe-use instructions adapted for lay users.
- Special provisions: Added requirements for communal-use barbecues and clarification on the use of a Residual Current Device (RCD) (Clause 7.12).
- Normative changes: Some notes were elevated to normative status in the 2025 amendment; the edition is a technical revision over previous editions.
Practical applications
- Manufacturers and product designers: Use the standard during design, component selection and instructions-for-use development to meet international safety expectations.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies: Apply the specified tests and clauses (with IEC 60335-1) for type testing, certification and regulatory compliance.
- Regulators and procurement: Reference the standard when defining safety requirements for imported or purchased outdoor barbecue equipment for household, commercial or communal settings.
- Safety engineers and compliance teams: Implement requirements for labeling, RCD provision, and communal-use considerations to reduce user risk.
Who should use this standard
- Appliance manufacturers, design engineers, test houses, certification bodies, national standards organizations, product safety consultants and regulatory authorities involved with household electrical cooking appliances.
