IEC 60364-7-717:2026 applies to electrical installations of mobile units or transportable units. The requirements of this document are not applicable to: – generating sets; – pleasure craft; – caravans and motor caravans; – electrical circuits and equipment for automotive purposes. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2009. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) The scope has been improved, providing more detail. b) The content of Clause 717.41 has been updated following the publication of IEC 60364-4-41:2005/AMD1:2017. c) Clauses concerning protection by automatic disconnection of the supply and additional protection have been added. d) Figures have been simplified, updated or deleted. e) Designation of SPD has been updated to use Tx SPD instead of Class x tested SPD.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60364-7-717:2026 specifies the safety requirements for low-voltage electrical installations in mobile units and transportable units. Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard addresses the unique risks associated with electrical systems in units designed to be moved, such as containers for office use, temporary dwellings, emergency vehicles, and outside-broadcast vans. The third edition represents a significant technical revision, reflecting updated industry practices and harmonizing with changes in associated standards.
The scope of IEC 60364-7-717:2026 covers all electrical installations in mobile or transportable units but excludes generating sets, pleasure craft, caravans, motor caravans, and automotive electrical equipment.
Key Topics
-
Protection Against Electric Shock The standard defines enhanced measures, including automatic disconnection of supply and additional RCD (residual current device) protection for final circuits and socket outlets. It requires that metallic chassis and frames are properly bonded to the main earthing terminal.
-
Overvoltage Protection Requirements for protection against transient overvoltages caused by atmospheric and switching phenomena are included, mandating surge protective devices (SPDs) suited to the installation and connection type.
-
Selection and Installation of Equipment Guidelines on cable types, wiring systems, and the installation of electrical components ensure safety and resilience against external influences such as moisture (IPX4 rating minimum for outdoor use), solid objects, and mechanical impact (IK08 for public areas).
-
Earthing and Bonding The standard clarifies earthing practices in mobile and transportable units, including requirements for accessible earth connections and the selection of protective bonding conductors (Class 5 flexible conductors).
-
Labelling and Identification Units must include clear, durable notices with information about supply types, voltage ratings, wiring configuration, and earthing arrangements to support safe operation and maintenance.
-
Special Provisions The document provides recommendations for the installation of ELV (extra-low voltage) equipment in hazardous areas (e.g., gas cylinder compartments) and requires protection against ignition sources.
Applications
IEC 60364-7-717:2026 is essential for:
-
Manufacturers and installers of mobile or transportable units Ensuring compliance throughout the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems in modular offices, clinics, broadcasting units, catering vehicles, and similar applications.
-
Event and temporary facility providers Guaranteeing that temporary structures with electrical installations meet robust safety criteria for both indoor and outdoor use.
-
Inspection bodies and regulatory authorities Verifying conformity with international requirements for equipment protection against water, dust, and mechanical stress, as well as adherence to effective bonding and earthing.
-
Owners and operators of specialized vehicles and modular units Supporting safe operations and ease of disconnection, relocation, or modification under varying supply and environmental conditions.
This standard underscores safety and reliability in dynamic environments where quick setup and frequent movement of electrical units can introduce additional hazards and operational challenges.
