Overview
IEC 60384-3-1:2006 is a blank detail specification for surface-mount fixed tantalum electrolytic capacitors with manganese dioxide solid electrolyte (assessment level EZ). It is a supplementary document to the IEC sectional specification (IEC 60384-3) and the generic specification (IEC 60384-1). The standard defines the required style, layout and minimum content for detail specifications so that individual component datasheets and qualification documents can be considered compliant with IEC practice. This second edition (2006) supersedes the 1989 edition and contains minor revisions to tables, figures and references. The publication is also available as a bilingual edition corresponding to the English text.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and purpose: Provides a blank template and mandatory items to be included in vendor or national detail specifications for SMT tantalum capacitors with MnO2 electrolyte.
- Identification elements: Required labeling of the detail specification, capacitor description, outline drawings, assessment level and reference data for comparison.
- Mechanical data: Recommended mounting method, dimensions and case‑size reference tables for interchangeability.
- Electrical ratings and characteristics: Specifies fields to be defined in detail specifications such as capacitance range, tolerance, rated voltage, category voltage, climatic category, temperature coefficient, tangent of loss angle (tan δ), leakage current, impedance, and equivalent series resistance (ESR).
- Marking and ordering information: Minimum marking, packaging (including IEC 60286-3 for taped packaging) and ordering data items required on purchase orders.
- Inspection and test requirements: Lot-by-lot and qualification test schedules (Groups A, B, C) including visual inspection, solderability, solvent resistance of marking, shear tests, temperature cycling, rapid change of temperature, climatic sequence and electrical re-measurements. Sampling plans reference IEC 60410.
- Documentation and conformity: Guidance on certified lot records, additional requirements, and how non‑complying detail specifications shall not be described as IEC‑compliant.
Applications and users
This standard is intended for:
- Capacitor manufacturers preparing IEC‑compliant detail specifications and product datasheets.
- Quality and qualification engineers performing component qualification and lot conformance testing.
- Procurement and component-approval teams in electronics OEMs who require standardized, comparable component data and test criteria.
- PCB assembly and reliability engineers specifying mounting, solderability and environmental performance for SMT tantalum capacitors.
