Applicable to all ferromagnetic materials. It is particularly aimed at the measurement of the magnetic dipole moment of permanent magnet (magnetically hard) materials and the measurement of the specific saturation magnetic polarization of cemented carbide materials having a ferromagnetic binder. To describe the general principles of the determination of the magnetic dipole moment of a ferromagnetic material specimen using a detection coil in an open magnetic circuit. By including a means of magnetizing the material to saturation, the saturation magnetic dipole moment can also be determined. In addition, the average magnetic polarization of a test specimen can be derived from the measurement of its magnetic dipole moment and volume. The calibration of magnetic moment coil systems and the measurement of the magnetic dipole moment of feebly magnetic materials can also be determined using this method. Measurements are normally performed at room temperature but measurements at other temperatures can be conducted by heating or cooling the volume occupied by the test specimen within the detection coil. The measurement of remanence, coercivity, maximum energy product and other parameters can be made in a closed magnetic circuit as described in IEC 60404-4 and IEC 60404-5. Measurement of the coercivity HcJ of soft and semi-hard materials can also be performed in an open circuit as described in IEC 60404-7.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60404-14:2002 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the methods for measuring the magnetic dipole moment of ferromagnetic material specimens. Specifically, it covers the withdrawal and rotation methods used to determine the magnetic dipole moment. This standard is applicable to all ferromagnetic materials, with particular emphasis on permanent magnet (magnetically hard) materials and cemented carbide materials containing a ferromagnetic binder.
The document provides a comprehensive framework for the measurement process, including principles, specimen preparation, calibration techniques, and uncertainty considerations. By facilitating precise magnetic dipole moment measurements, this standard supports the quality assurance and development of magnetic materials for technological and industrial applications.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability Applicable to all ferromagnetic materials, embracing both hard magnetic materials (permanent magnets) and materials with magnetic binders such as cemented carbides.
-
Measurement Methods
- Withdrawal Method: Measures the variation in magnetic flux when the specimen is moved out of the detection coil.
- Rotation Method: Measures magnetic flux changes as the specimen is rotated within the coil.
-
General Principles Utilizes a detection coil in an open magnetic circuit to measure the magnetic dipole moment. Magnetization can be applied to saturate the specimen, allowing the determination of saturation magnetic dipole moments.
-
Calibration Techniques Calibration includes the use of a calibrated permanent magnet sample and mutual inductor methods to ensure measurement accuracy.
-
Magnetic Polarization and Saturation From the magnetic dipole moment and specimen volume, the average magnetic polarization J and specific saturation magnetic polarization (σ_s) can be derived.
-
Temperature Considerations Measurements are normally made at room temperature but can be performed at different temperatures by controlling the specimen environment within the detection coil.
-
Measurement Uncertainty and Reporting The standard discusses methods to evaluate measurement uncertainty and specifies the requirements for reporting test results.
Applications
IEC 60404-14:2002 is essential for:
-
Permanent Magnet Quality Control Ensuring the magnetic performance of magnetically hard materials in motors, sensors, and actuators.
-
Research and Development of Magnetic Materials Characterizing new ferromagnetic alloys and composites, including cemented carbide materials with magnetic binders.
-
Industrial Measurement and Calibration Laboratories Standardizing measurement procedures to maintain consistency across facilities performing magnetic dipole moment assessments.
-
Material Certification and Compliance Providing standardized measurement protocols required for material certification in various electrical and magnetic device manufacturing sectors.
-
Evaluation of Feebly Magnetic Materials Measuring materials with very low magnetic moments using calibrated coil systems.
