Overview
IEC 60502-4:2023 specifies type test requirements for accessories used with power cables with extruded insulation for rated voltages from 3,6/6 (7,2) kV up to 18/30 (36) kV (commonly referred to as 6 kV to 30 kV range). As Part 4 of the IEC 60502 series, this international standard defines how to assemble, test and document accessories such as terminations, joints, stop-ends and separable connectors used on extruded-insulation power cables. Test methods referenced are provided in IEC 61442. The standard excludes accessories for special applications (aerial, submarine, shipboard, explosive atmospheres, fire‑resistant or seismic designs).
Key technical topics and requirements
- Type testing and test sequences: Defined sequences for terminations, straight/branch/loop joints, stop ends and separable connectors, including summary tables of required tests and voltages.
- Range-taking vs non-range-taking accessories: New classification in the 2023 edition that determines the applicable test scope and extensions of approval.
- Assembly and identification: Requirements for cable, connector and accessory identification, installation procedures for test samples and conditioning prior to testing.
- Dynamic short‑circuit performance: Introduction of dynamic short‑circuit classes 0–3 to characterise mechanical/electrical behavior under fault currents.
- Partial discharge and high-voltage testing: Options for partial discharge testing (including use of 2 U) and removal of specific DC testing from several test tables.
- Conductor sizes and separable connectors: Addition of 240 mm2 conductor size for accessory testing and a 2 500 A separable connector size with corresponding test methods.
- Reporting and visual examination: Specific requirements for test reports and standardised recording sheets (Annex A, B, C), plus defined visual examination procedures.
Practical applications
- Ensures that cable accessories (terminations, joints, separable connectors) are safe, reliable and compatible with extruded-insulation power cables in medium-voltage distribution and industrial networks.
- Used to validate new accessory designs, changes in materials or manufacturing processes, and to support product certification or factory type testing.
- Helps utilities, EPC contractors and consulting engineers specify accessory test performance for power distribution, industrial plants and infrastructure projects.
