Overview
IEC 60794-1-133:2025 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Titled “Optical fibre cables - Part 1-133: Generic specifications - Basic optical cable test procedures - Mechanical test methods - Multiple cable coiling and uncoiling performance, Method E33,” this standard defines a test procedure, known as Method E33, designed to demonstrate the ability of an optical fibre cable to withstand multiple cycles of coiling and uncoiling on a specified cable reel diameter. This procedure is especially relevant for evaluating cables intended for mobile, rapid, or multiple deployments.
This first edition supersedes and replaces Method E33 from IEC 60794-1-21:2015/AMD1:2020 and features an updated structure and numbering scheme, offering improved clarity and alignment within the IEC 60794-1-1xx series.
Key Topics
-
Purpose of the Test Procedure:
The standard specifies how to assess the mechanical and optical integrity of optical fibre cables when they are regularly coiled and uncoiled, as often occurs in mobile or temporary installation scenarios.
-
Performance Evaluation:
Cables are evaluated for changes in optical attenuation and for physical damage as a function of repeated coiling and uncoiling. The methodology is intended to be non-destructive.
-
Test Set-up Requirements:
- Use of a test cable reel with a defined core diameter, reflecting operational deployment conditions.
- Measurement of attenuation using optical measurement equipment following IEC 60793-1-46.
- Procedures for sample preparation, including guidance on sample length and proper end termination or fixation.
- Criteria for coiling, tension, speed, number of cycles, and measurement intervals.
-
Testing Process:
- Uncoil the cable sample, make initial measurements, coil it onto the test reel, and record optical changes.
- Repeat the coiling and uncoiling for a specified number of cycles.
- Ensure that tests do not introduce torsion and do not stress end connections.
Applications
