Overview
IEC 60839-5-2:2016 - Alarm and electronic security systems - Part 5-2 defines equipment requirements for the supervised premises transceiver (SPT) used in alarm transmission systems (ATS). The standard sets performance, reliability, resilience, security and safety characteristics for SPTs whether they are stand‑alone devices or integrated within an alarm system. It also covers SPTs that share interconnection, control, communication or power with other applications. This edition updates the state of the art (notably IP networks), harmonizes with ATS categories in IEC 60839-5-1:2014, and introduces formal test requirements.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard details functional, operational and test requirements for SPTs, including:
- Functional requirements: classification of SPTs, access levels, remote access, secure uploading/downloading of software and firmware, parameter storage and event logging.
- Operation modes: store-and-forward and pass-through modes for alarm messages and fault/status reporting.
- Interfaces: standardized serial and parallel interfaces to the alarm system (AS), and provisions for proprietary interfaces; Annex A describes AS–SPT interface requirements.
- Transmission network monitoring: requirements for SPT monitoring and fault reporting to the alarm receiving centre or AS.
- Power and tamper protection: power supply resilience and housing/tamper protection requirements to maintain service continuity and prevent circumvention.
- Information security and substitution protection: measures to prevent spoofing, unauthorized substitution and preserve integrity of alarm messages.
- Testing: standardized tests for access control, firmware upload/download, event log capacity/endurance, clock resolution, operation modes, interface behaviour and ATS fault reporting.
Practical applications and users
IEC 60839-5-2 is applied where reliable alarm transmission is critical:
- Alarm equipment manufacturers specifying SPT design and compliance.
- Alarm system integrators and installers deploying SPTs in commercial, industrial and residential premises.
- Alarm receiving centre (ARC) operators and alarm transmission service providers validating connectivity and reporting behaviour.
- Insurance underwriters, fire departments, telecommunications and network operators assessing system resilience and security.
- End users and facility managers seeking standards‑based assurance for alarm transmission infrastructure.
