IEC 60884-1:2022 applies to plugs and fixed or portable socket-outlets for AC only, with or without earthing contact, with a rated voltage greater than 50 V but not exceeding 440 V and a rated current not exceeding 32 A, intended for household and similar purposes, either indoors or outdoors. Compatible plugs and socket-outlets, when combined, form a plug and socket-outlet system. Standardized systems used around the world are reported in IEC/TR 60083. The rated current is limited to 16 A maximum for accessories provided with screwless-type terminals. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2002, Amendment 1:2006 and Amendment 2:2013. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: plugs and socket-outlets incorporating pilot lights; crimped connections in accessories; insulation piercing terminals (IPT); accessories to be used with American Wire Gauge (AWG) cables; accessories used in T° below −5 °C down to and including −45 °C; accessories used in T° above +40 °C up to and including +70 °C; plugs and socket-outlets for high load (HL); clarification of some definitions; durability of markings test; introduction of thermal monitoring in the plug; requirements for shutters in portable socket-outlets; test walls for the verification of ingress of water; rewriting of the temperature rise clause. The contents of the corrigendum of November 2023 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview - IEC 60884-1:2022 (Plugs and socket‑outlets - General requirements)
IEC 60884-1:2022 is the fourth edition of the international standard that sets general safety and performance requirements for plugs and fixed or portable socket‑outlets intended for household and similar purposes. It applies to AC devices with a rated voltage > 50 V and ≤ 440 V and a rated current ≤ 32 A (with a 16 A limit for accessories using screwless‑type terminals). This edition is a technical revision and includes the November 2023 corrigendum.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard covers design, construction, marking, testing and verification methods, including (high‑level):
- Scope and ratings: limits for voltage and current, preferred combinations and classifications.
- Safety features: protection against electric shock, earthing provisions, requirements for shutters in portable socket‑outlets.
- Terminals and connections: requirements for screw, screwless and crimped connections, including pull, torque and flexing tests.
- New and updated topics in this edition:
- Plugs and socket‑outlets incorporating pilot lights
- Crimped connections in accessories and production tests
- Insulation piercing terminals (IPT)
- Compatibility with AWG cables
- Use in extreme ambient temperatures (down to −45 °C and up to +70 °C)
- High‑load (HL) plugs and socket‑outlets
- Thermal monitoring in plugs and rewritten temperature rise clause
- Durability of markings test and clarification of definitions
- Ingress of water verification using test walls
- Performance and reliability tests: mechanical strength, resistance to heat, ageing, EMC/EMF, insulation resistance, breaking capacity, normal operation, cord retention and pin retention tests.
- Annexes: normative and informative annexes provide detailed requirements (e.g., AWG, IPT, HL, low/high temperature use, crimp production tests).
Practical applications - who should use this standard
IEC 60884-1:2022 is essential for:
- Manufacturers and designers of plugs, socket‑outlets and related accessories - for product design and compliance.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - to perform type testing, routine tests and conformity assessments.
- Regulators and standards committees - for national adoption and safety regulations.
- OEMs, specifiers and procurement teams - to define product requirements and ensure interoperability and safety.
- Safety and compliance engineers - for risk assessment, selection of terminals (screw vs screwless), thermal design and ingress protection solutions.
Related standards
- IEC/TR 60083 - reporting standardized plug and socket‑outlet systems used worldwide (compatibility guidance).
- Other IEC product and installation standards may reference or complement IEC 60884‑1 for system‑level safety and installation practice.
