Overview
IEC 61084-1:2017 (with Amendment 1:2024) defines the general requirements and test methods for cable trunking systems (CTS) and cable ducting systems (CDS) used in electrical and communication installations. It covers systems intended to accommodate, and where required provide protective separation for, insulated conductors, cables and possibly other electrical equipment up to 1 000 V AC and 1 500 V DC. The standard excludes conduit, cable tray, cable ladder, power track systems and equipment covered by other standards. This second edition updates classification, construction, and mechanical and electrical properties.
Key topics and technical requirements
IEC 61084-1:2017 specifies requirements and tests across these major areas:
- Scope and classification
- Classification by material, impact resistance, temperature range, flame propagation, electrical continuity/insulation, degree of protection (IP) and optional halogen content.
- Marking and documentation
- Requirements for product identification, instructions and test evidence to support installation and compliance.
- Construction and dimensions
- Design features to avoid sharp edges, ensure apparatus mounting, cable restraining/anchorage and secure mechanical connections.
- Mechanical properties and tests
- Impact tests (storage/transport and installation/application), external load, linear deflection, cable support and access cover retention.
- Electrical properties and tests
- Electrical continuity (impedance) and insulation tests (insulation resistance, dielectric strength) for systems with electrical continuity or insulating characteristics.
- Thermal and fire performance
- Resistance to heat, reaction to fire (contribution, spread) and resistance to flame propagation.
- External influences and environmental properties
- Degrees of protection per IEC 60529 (IP ratings), resistance to corrosive/polluting substances and optional halogen-free classification per IEC 63355.
- Electromagnetic compatibility and equipotential bonding
- Requirements where applicable for conductive systems and bonding arrangements.
Practical applications - who uses this standard
IEC 61084-1 is used by:
- Manufacturers of CTS/CDS for design validation, type testing and product marking.
- Test laboratories for performing mandated mechanical, electrical, thermal and fire tests.
- Specifiers, consultants and electrical designers selecting trunking and ducting solutions for commercial, industrial and communication installations.
- Installers and contractors to ensure products installed meet required safety, IP, mechanical load and thermal ratings.
- Regulators and procurement teams for compliance, tender specifications and acceptance testing.
Practical value includes product selection (match IP, impact class, temperature and fire performance), compliance documentation and ensuring safe, durable cable management in installations.
