IEC 61131-9:2022 specifies a single-drop digital communication interface technology for small sensors and actuators SDCI (commonly known as IO-Link™ ), which extends the traditional digital input and digital output interfaces as defined in IEC 61131-2 towards a point-to-point communication link for the exchange of complex data in both directions. This techno¬logy also enables the transfer of parameters to Devices and the delivery of identification and diagnostic information from the Devices to the automation system. This technology is mainly intended for use with simple sensors and actuators in factory automation, which include small and cost-effective microcontrollers. This document specifies the SDCI communication services and protocol (physical layer, data link layer and application layer in accordance with the ISO/OSI reference model) for both SDCI Masters and Devices. This document also includes EMC test requirements. This document does not cover communication interfaces or systems incorporating multiple point or multiple drop linkages, or integration of SDCI into higher level systems such as fieldbuses.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61131-9:2022 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the Single-Drop Digital Communication Interface (SDCI) technology for small sensors and actuators. Commonly known as IO-Link™, this standard extends traditional digital input/output interfaces to enable point-to-point communication for exchanging complex data bidirectionally. It primarily targets simple, cost-effective microcontroller-based sensors and actuators used in factory automation. The standard covers the communication services and protocols across physical, data link, and application layers, providing a robust framework for masters and devices to communicate in automation systems. Additionally, IEC 61131-9:2022 includes electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test requirements to ensure reliable operation in industrial environments.
Key Topics
-
SDCI Communication Technology Describes a single-drop digital communication interface enabling enhanced data exchange capabilities for small sensors and actuators beyond conventional digital inputs and outputs.
-
Protocol Layers Specifies the technology’s communication framework across the ISO/OSI model's physical layer, data link layer, and application layer, ensuring standardized communication services for SDCI Masters and Devices.
-
Bidirectional Data Exchange Supports bi-directional transfer of sensor/actuator parameters, real-time process data, diagnostic information, and device identification to automation systems.
-
Physical Layer and Wiring Defines physical medium requirements including connectors, cabling, port types, power supply options, and topology for streamlined integration into factory automation.
-
Data Link Layer Functionality Details protocols for message handling, process data cycling, command processing, and event management to ensure efficient and reliable data communication.
-
Application Layer Services Outlines services facilitating device configuration, parameterization, and system diagnostics to enhance automation system flexibility and maintainability.
-
System Management Covers management protocols for both Masters and Devices, including service procedures, state machines, and compatibility support to maintain system integrity.
-
EMC Requirements Includes electromagnetic compatibility testing criteria to guarantee stable operation within harsh industrial electromagnetic environments.
Applications
IEC 61131-9:2022 is explicitly designed for use in factory automation systems where small sensors and actuators require reliable, standardized digital communication capabilities. Typical applications include:
-
Industrial Automation Sensors and Actuators Enabling smart communication interfaces for simple devices such as proximity sensors, pressure sensors, valves, and motors, thereby adding intelligence to traditional binary signals.
-
Cost-Effective Device Integration Facilitates affordable communication interfaces for devices with limited processing power, maximizing performance without increasing hardware complexity.
-
Real-Time Data Acquisition and Monitoring Supports continuous process data exchange and diagnostic information flow, essential for predictive maintenance, quality control, and process optimization.
-
System Parameterization and Configuration Allows centralized and remote setup of device parameters, simplifying commissioning and reducing downtime in automated production lines.
-
Automation Network Interfaces Acts as a foundation for connecting low-level devices directly to higher-level systems such as PLCs, through standardized protocols that map to various fieldbus and network systems.
