IEC 61236:2010 applies to saddles, stick clamps and their accessories, used for live working. The products designed and manufactured according to this standard contribute to the safety of the users provided they are used by skilled persons, in accordance with safe methods of work and the instructions for use. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1993. It constitutes a technical revision. It includes the following significant technical changes from the previous edition: - clarification of the requirements and of the test provisions; - addition of a test for the durability of marking; - application of conformity assessment for products having completed the production phase, according to IEC 61318:2007 (Ed. 3).
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61236:2010 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focused on live working safety equipment, specifically saddles, stick clamps, and their accessories. This second edition updates and replaces the original 1993 version by clarifying requirements, enhancing test provisions, introducing durability marking tests, and applying conformity assessments aligned with IEC 61318:2007.
The standard aims to ensure the safety of skilled personnel performing live electrical work by specifying strict design, mechanical, dimensional, and performance criteria for these critical tools. By complying with IEC 61236:2010, manufacturers and users can reduce risk and meet globally recognized safety benchmarks.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: Covers the design and manufacture of saddles, stick clamps, and related accessories used specifically for live working under energized electrical conditions.
- Technical Requirements: Outlines mechanical robustness, dimensional accuracy, corrosion protection, and marking durability critical for live working tools.
- Testing Procedures: Details comprehensive visual, functional, mechanical, and dimensional tests to verify product reliability and operator safety.
- Conformity Assessment: Emphasizes the importance of product validation post-production to ensure continued compliance with IEC 61236 safety standards.
- Marking and Instructions: Specifies durable markings and clear usage instructions for informed and safe application by skilled workers.
- Environmental Considerations: Encourages responsible design and disposal practices to minimize environmental impact throughout the product life cycle.
Applications
IEC 61236:2010 applies primarily to industries and workers involved in:
- Electrical utility live-line maintenance and repairs
- Installation and servicing of overhead power lines and electrical infrastructure
- Use of insulated saddles and clamps to support live working tools safely
- Tasks requiring secure attachment points on poles, towers, crossarms, or other live electrical components
- Electrical safety equipment manufacturers designing and certifying live working accessories
- Quality assurance and compliance verification for safety gear used in energized environments
The standardized safety measures help protect technicians from electrical hazards, support safe handling of live conductors, and maintain operational integrity in high-voltage environments.
Related Standards
IEC 61236:2010 works in conjunction with several critical IEC and international standards including:
- IEC 61318:2007 - Conformity assessment requirements applicable to live working equipment after production.
- IEC 61477 - General requirements for live working-portable equipment for use on or near live parts.
- IEC 60417-5216 - Graphical symbols for safety signs, used for the “suitable for live working” double triangle mark.
Manufacturers and users should also reference national regulations and complementary standards that govern electrical safety, mechanical testing, and certification processes to ensure comprehensive compliance.
