IEC 61496-2:2013 specifies requirements for the design, construction and testing of electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE) designed specifically to detect persons as part of a safety-related system, employing active opto-electronic protective devices (AOPDs) for the sensing function. Special attention is directed to features which ensure that an appropriate safety-related performance is achieved. An ESPE may include optional safety-related functions, the requirements for which are given in Annex A of IEC 61946-1:2012 and of this part. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2006. It constitutes a technical revision and includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - Requirements have been corrected and made easier to understand. - Test procedures have been revised to make them easier to perform and to improve repeatability. - Guidance is provided for the evaluation and verification of AOPDs using design techniques for which the test procedures of this part are not sufficient. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 61496-1:2012.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61496-2:2013 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) dedicated to the safety of machinery through electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE). This Part 2 of the IEC 61496 series specifically addresses active opto-electronic protective devices (AOPDs) used in safety-related sensing functions. The standard establishes essential requirements for the design, construction, and testing of AOPDs to reliably detect the presence of persons and thus prevent injury by enabling machines to revert to safe conditions promptly.
This third edition revises the previous 2006 standard, simplifying requirements, enhancing test procedures for better repeatability, and providing additional guidance on evaluating advanced designs that may not be fully covered by conventional testing. It is intended to be used alongside IEC 61496-1:2012 and serves as a product family standard applicable across various machinery safety implementations involving AOPDs.
Key Topics
The standard systematically covers the following critical areas to ensure the safe operation of machinery using AOPDs:
-
Functional Requirements: Defines the operational safety performance criteria that AOPDs must achieve to detect persons reliably and prevent hazardous situations.
-
Design Requirements: Specifies the engineering and construction parameters to maintain integrity and safety under various operational conditions.
-
Environmental Requirements: Covers the environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and electromagnetic disturbances under which the AOPDs must effectively function.
-
Testing Procedures: Details rigorous functional, environmental, and safety tests, making them easier to perform and increasing repeatability. These include alignment, detection sensitivity, and interference testing essential for verifying compliance.
-
Marking and Documentation: Provides guidelines for clear marking and accompanying documents to facilitate correct installation, operation, and maintenance.
-
Optional Safety Functions: Annex A outlines optional safety-related functions that enhance overall system reliability and fault tolerance.
Applications
IEC 61496-2:2013 is essential for manufacturers, safety engineers, and compliance professionals involved with machinery that incorporates AOPDs such as light curtains, laser scanners, and other opto-electronic protective devices. Typical application areas include:
-
Industrial Automation: Safeguarding robotic cells, conveyors, and automated assembly lines where personnel may be exposed to moving parts.
-
Manufacturing Machinery: Protection integration within press machines, cutting systems, and packaging equipment.
-
Material Handling Equipment: Ensuring operator safety around lift systems, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and palletizers.
-
Custom Safety Solutions: Designing bespoke safety barriers and monitoring systems using AOPDs for specialized machinery.
By adhering to this standard, organizations can ensure enhanced personnel safety, reduce downtime from accidents, and meet international regulatory requirements for machinery safety.
Related Standards
To fully implement and comply with IEC 61496-2:2013, it is important to consider additional complementary standards:
-
IEC 61496-1:2012: Provides the general requirements and terminology for electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE), forming a foundation for Part 2.
-
IEC 61946-1:2012 (Annex A): Covers optional safety-related functions for ESPE devices, referenced within this standard.
-
ISO 13849 and IEC 62061: Standards for the safety-related control systems of machinery that often work in conjunction with ESPE and AOPD devices.
-
IEC 60204-1: Electrical equipment of machines – safety requirements relevant to integrating ESPE in machinery control.
Following these intertwined international standards ensures a comprehensive safety management strategy for machinery protection using active opto-electronic technologies.
