IEC 61744:2023 provides standard procedures for the calibration of optical fibre chromatic dispersion (CD) test sets. This document is applicable to all types of CD test sets, with the exception that measurements on multimode optical fibres are excluded. The purpose of this document is to define a standard procedure for calibrating optical fibre chromatic dispersion (CD) test sets. The detailed calibration steps used vary according to the measurement technique used in the CD test set. Whilst it is acknowledged that chromatic dispersion also occurs in multimode fibre and this fibre can be measured on many CD test sets, this document will restrict discussion to single mode fibre measurements applications only. The purpose of the procedures outlined in this document is to focus manufacturers and users of CD test sets toward the reduction of measurement uncertainty in chromatic dispersion determination in optical fibres under all applicable conditions. The procedures apply to calibration laboratories and to the manufacturers or users of CD test sets for the purpose of a) calibrating CD test sets, and b) evaluating the level of performance of the instrument. Use of the procedures also allows correct evaluation of CD test set uncertainty, relative and traceable to appropriate (for example, national) standards. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2005. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) updated terms and definitions; b) the use of a reference fibre standard for calibration is now allowed and at the same level as the other calibration method; c) Annex B was split into a new Annex B (on calibration uncertainty, still normative) and a new Annex C (on uncertainty at operating conditions, informative); d) removed former C.3.4 on interferometric method since this method is no longer supported in IEC 60793-1-42; e) removed Annex D and other references in text to calibration compensation to align with other calibration documents; f) removed Annex E and other references in text to use of air wavelength since it is not used in the fibre domain.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 61744:2023 is the third edition of the international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies standardized procedures for the calibration of fibre optic chromatic dispersion (CD) test sets. This standard applies to all types of CD test sets used for measuring chromatic dispersion in single mode optical fibres, explicitly excluding multimode fibre measurements.
The main goal of IEC 61744:2023 is to establish a uniform calibration methodology that reduces measurement uncertainty and ensures accuracy and traceability to national or international standards. By defining consistent calibration routines, this standard benefits manufacturers, calibration laboratories, and users by facilitating reliable performance evaluation and consistent operation of CD test sets.
This edition updates and replaces the 2005 version, incorporating modernized terms, allowing calibration using a reference fibre standard, splitting annexes for clarity on uncertainty calculation, and removing outdated techniques and references.
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability: Covers calibration procedures suitable for all single mode fibre based chromatic dispersion test sets while excluding multimode fibre measurements.
- Calibration procedures: Detailed step-by-step methodologies for:
- Wavelength calibration (including discrete and tunable light sources)
- Delay (chromatic dispersion) calibration with specialized equipment like optical delay lines and differential delay simulators
- Calibration using reference fibre standards as an alternative or supplementary method
- Measurement uncertainty: Guidance on calculating and reporting measurement uncertainties to improve accuracy and traceability.
- Environmental conditions: Specifies requirements for temperature, humidity, and other factors influencing calibration accuracy.
- Traceability: Emphasizes linkage of measurements back to internationally recognized reference standards.
- Documentation: Standardization of calibration certificates and reporting formats for clarity and consistency.
- Technical revisions: Removal of interferometric calibration methods, no use of air wavelength in fibre domain, and updates reflecting current industry practices.
Applications
- Optical fibre network deployment: Ensuring precision in CD measurements during installation and verification of fibre optic communication links.
- Manufacturing quality control: Calibration of CD test sets used in production environments to maintain compliance with performance specifications.
- Calibration laboratories: Implementing standardized procedures to provide traceable and reliable instrument calibration services.
- Research and development: Supporting R&D of fibre optic components and systems by providing accurate chromatic dispersion data.
- Telecommunications industry: Maintaining optimal system performance by monitoring chromatic dispersion effects using well-calibrated test instruments.
Using IEC 61744:2023 procedures helps reduce measurement uncertainty, improves product quality, and ensures interoperability across global optical communication infrastructures.
