Overview
IEC 61747-4-1:2014 - Liquid crystal display devices, Part 4-1: Matrix colour LCD modules - Essential ratings and characteristics - defines the essential ratings and characteristics required for matrix colour LCD modules. This second edition (2014) consolidates content from the IEC 61747 series, adds thin-film transistor (TFT) technical kinds and revises the electrical and optical characteristics (Table 1). The publication is intended to be read in conjunction with IEC 61747-1-1 (generic specification).
Key topics
- Scope and intent: Specifies the minimum information manufacturers should provide for matrix colour LCD modules (essential ratings and characteristics).
- Module types and materials: Covers active-matrix examples such as TFT (amorphous silicon, polycrystalline silicon, oxide, organic) and optional integrated light sources.
- Modes of operation: Defines addressing modes (passive matrix, active matrix, TFT, TFD) and optical modes (reflective, transmissive, transflective), number of colours and grey levels, normally white/black operation.
- Limiting values (absolute maximum ratings): Requires ambient operating/storage temperature ranges, maximum soldering temperature, supply and input signal voltage limits and backlight limits.
- Electrical and optical characteristics (Table 1): Standardizes specification fields like supply voltages (logic and LCD drive), input signal voltages, operating/backlight voltages and currents, operating frequencies, contrast ratio, and supply currents.
- Mechanical and interface details: Outline drawings, dimensions, material descriptions, pin layout/assignment, connection methods (connectors, flex cable), and preferred viewing direction.
- Supplementary requirements: Timing characteristics, voltage sequencing, temperature-dependent operating ranges, handling/ESD precautions, installation guidance and safety information.
Applications and practical value
- Ensures consistent product datasheets for matrix colour LCD modules used in consumer electronics, industrial displays, instrumentation and embedded systems.
- Helps OEMs, module designers and system integrators compare and select displays using standardized electrical and optical parameters.
- Supports QA, test engineers and procurement by defining the essential ratings needed for design validation, thermal/mechanical planning and supply compatibility.
- Facilitates interoperability of display modules with driver electronics and backlight units by specifying signal, timing and connector expectations.
Who should use this standard
- Display manufacturers (module and cell designers)
- Electronics OEMs and embedded systems designers
- Test and quality assurance engineers
- Procurement specialists assessing display specifications
- Regulatory and compliance teams referencing IEC display norms
