Overview
IEC 62071-2:2005 specifies the compression format for the D-7 helical-scan compressed digital video cassette system using 6.35 mm magnetic tape. It defines the DV-based data structure and encoding rules for transmitting digital audio, subcode and compressed video for both NTSC (525/60) and PAL (625/50) systems. Supported sampling modes are 4:1:1 (25 Mb/s) and 4:2:2 (50 Mb/s). This part 2 document covers the format of header, subcode, VAUX, audio and video sections and the video compression chain (DCT, quantization, VLC) used in the D-7 format.
Key Topics
- Supported systems & bit rates: 525/60 and 625/50 formats with 4:1:1 at 25 Mb/s and 4:2:2 at 50 Mb/s.
- DV-based data structure: Definition of DIF sequences, DIF blocks and the payload mapping for each section (header, subcode, VAUX, audio, video).
- Header & subcode format: Pack and timecode structures to identify and navigate recorded streams.
- VAUX & audio sections: Auxiliary data mapping, audio sample conversion and auxiliary pack arrangements.
- Video compression: Block-based compression using DCT processing, quantization classes, variable length coding (VLC), macro-block/super-block organization and compressed macro-block arrangement for both sampling modes.
- Error handling: Video error code definitions and bit-rate reduction arrangements for segments.
- Annexes: Normative digital filter for sampling-rate conversion from 4:2:2 to 4:1:1, differences versus IEC 61834 and a D-7 recorder block diagram.
Applications
IEC 62071-2 is intended for organizations and professionals working with D-7 cassette systems and DV-based compressed video:
- Broadcast equipment manufacturers implementing D-7 VTRs, tape transports and interfaces.
- System integrators and engineers designing digital tape ingest/playout chains for 525/60 and 625/50 workflows.
- Archivists and media restoration teams preserving or migrating legacy D-7 tapes to file-based formats.
- Forensic and compliance labs needing precise data layout for recovery and validation of tape recordings.
- Standards bodies and test labs validating conformance to D-7 compression and data structures.
Related Standards
- IEC 62071-1 - VTR specifications for Format D-7 (tape, recording, modulation).
- IEC 62071-3 - Data stream format for transmission over 270 Mb/s and 360 Mb/s serial digital interfaces.
