IEC 62148-1:2017 aims to assure interchangeability in physical interfaces between fibre optic active components and devices supplied by different manufacturers, but it does not guarantee operation between such devices. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition, published in 2002, and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical change with respect to the previous edition: addition of a free space optical coupling interface in Clause 5. Keywords: physical interfaces between fibre optic components
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62148-1:2017 is an International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard that defines package and interface standards for fibre optic active components and devices. Part 1 focuses on general guidelines and ensuring physical interchangeability between components from different manufacturers. This standard does not guarantee the operation compatibility of devices but establishes standardized physical interfaces covering optical, electrical, and mechanical connections.
Significantly, the 2017 edition introduces a free space optical coupling interface, enhancing the scope of physical interface standards for fibre optic components.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Objective The standard ensures compatibility in physical interfaces between fibre optic active components, such as transceivers and optical modules, promoting interchangeability across manufacturers while clarifying that operational compatibility is not ensured.
-
Classification of Interfaces The standard classifies fibre optic components into types based on the combination of optical and electrical interface styles:
- Type 1 & 2: Fibre optic connector interfaces with direct solderable or plug-in electrical terminals
- Type 3 & 4: Fibre optic pigtail interfaces with corresponding electrical terminals
- Type 5 & 6: Free space optical coupling interfaces with electrical terminals types
- Type 7: Other modules not covered by types 1-6
-
Optical Interfaces This includes standardized optical connector interfaces (referencing IEC 61754), pigtail interfaces aligned with IEC 60794 fiber specifications, and new free space optical coupling interfaces, defined by detailed optical beam parameters ensuring efficient coupling.
-
Electrical Interfaces Electrical connections must adhere to interchangeability requirements defined in IEC standards such as IEC 60191 and IEC 60130. This includes connector and non-connector types, terminal numbering conventions, and clearly defined terminal functions.
-
Mechanical Outline and Footprint Drawings of the case outline and footprint standardize mechanical mounting, including seating planes and fixturing features, ensuring components fit and align properly on mounting boards.
Applications
IEC 62148-1:2017 is pivotal in industries relying on fibre optic active components including telecommunications, data centers, and high-speed networking equipment manufacturing. By standardizing physical interfaces, this document facilitates:
-
Component Interchangeability Manufacturers can produce modules with compatible physical interfaces, simplifying system integration and inventory management.
-
Design Consistency Equipment designers gain predictable component footprints and interfaces, improving reliability and reducing development time.
-
Free Space Optical Systems The inclusion of free space optical coupling interfaces supports emerging applications where direct fiber connectors are unfeasible, such as optical interconnects within modules or photonic integrated circuits.
-
Quality Assurance and Compliance Organizations can benchmark their components against international standards, ensuring adherence to widely recognized interface specifications.
