IEC 62321-13:2026 specifies three techniques for the determination of free Bisphenol A (BPA) in plastics of electrotechnical products. This document describes the use of liquid chromatography–diode array detector (LC-DAD), liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS), liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) with these test methods detailed in Annex A and Annex B. These test methods have been evaluated for use with PC, PC/ABS, PP matrices containing free BPA between 20 mg/kg to 500 mg/kg as shown in the Pre-IIS 13 results in Annex C and IIS 13 results in Annex D. The use of these methods for BPA concentration ranges of plastics, other than those specified in Annex C and Annex D, has not been evaluated. WARNING – Persons using this document should be familiar with normal laboratory practice. This document does not purport to address all of the safety problems, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to ensure compliance with any national regulatory conditions.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62321-13:2026 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for the determination of Bisphenol A (BPA) in plastics used in electrotechnical products. This standard provides globally recognized testing methods using liquid chromatography–diode array detection (LC-DAD), liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The aim is to accurately measure the levels of free BPA present in plastic matrices such as polycarbonate (PC), polycarbonate/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (PC/ABS), and polypropylene (PP), supporting compliance with environmental regulations and industry best practices.
Key Topics
-
Scope of Measurement IEC 62321-13:2026 outlines analytical techniques specifically for the detection and quantification of free Bisphenol A in plastic materials of electrotechnical products. It covers:
- PC, PC/ABS, and PP matrices containing 20 mg/kg to 500 mg/kg of BPA.
- Test method procedures, sample preparation, and quality control criteria.
-
Analytical Methods The standard details three instrumental methods:
- LC-DAD: Enables detection of BPA via ultraviolet absorption.
- LC-MS: Combines liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry for improved specificity.
- LC-MS/MS: Offers tandem mass spectrometry for enhanced sensitivity and confirmation. These validated methods ensure reliable BPA measurement in products aimed at global and regional regulatory compliance.
-
Testing Conditions & Calibration The standard provides:
- Requirements for lab equipment and reagents with high purity to prevent contamination.
- Guidelines for preparation of calibration solutions, standard curves, and internal standards for precise quantification.
-
Sample Preparation and Extraction Procedures for:
- Safe sampling and homogenization of product materials.
- BPA extraction using ultrasonic baths, specific solvent mixtures, and strict measures to avoid thermal or cross-contamination.
-
Quality Assurance Emphasis on maintaining data accuracy through internal standards, calibration verification, and method validation. Users are reminded to comply with local laboratory safety practices and health regulations.
Applications
-
Regulatory Compliance Enables manufacturers and laboratories to demonstrate conformance with substance restrictions under regulations such as EU RoHS, REACH, and other emerging global standards concerning BPA in electrical and electronic equipment.
-
Product Testing and Assessment Supports internal quality control, product certification, and due diligence in the supply chain by:
- Testing raw materials and finished products for BPA content.
- Ensuring materials meet prescribed safety thresholds to mitigate environmental and health risks.
-
Material Research and Development Assists R&D teams in evaluating new plastic formulations and substitutes for BPA, fostering safe innovation in sustainable electrotechnical products.
