IEC 62327:2017 specifies general characteristics, general test procedures, radiation characteristics, as well as electrical, mechanical, safety, and environmental characteristics. This document applies to hand-held instruments used to detect and identify radionuclides and radioactive material, to estimate ambient dose equivalent rate from photon radiation, and optionally, to detect neutron radiation. They are commonly known as radionuclide identification devices or RIDs. This new edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - addition of detailed methods of test; - revised identification test acceptance criteria for environmental tests; - changed format to match the one of similar standards.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62327:2017 (Edition 2.0) is an international standard from the IEC for radiation protection instrumentation - specifically hand-held instruments (commonly called radionuclide identification devices (RIDs)) used to detect and identify radionuclides and radioactive material, and to estimate ambient dose equivalent rate from photon radiation. The standard also covers devices with optional neutron detection capability. This edition adds detailed methods of test, revised environmental identification test acceptance criteria, and a format aligned with related standards.
Key Topics and Requirements
IEC 62327:2017 specifies the following technical areas and requirements:
- General characteristics: performance expectations, markings, communication interfaces and data formats.
- Radiation detectors: detector types, stabilization time, and radiation response requirements.
- Radiation detection requirements:
- Estimation of ambient dose equivalent rate from photons.
- Gamma source localization and over-range behavior.
- Radionuclide identification: library requirements, identification results, mixed-source identification guidance.
- Optional neutron detection and neutron indication in the presence of photons.
- General test procedures: standardized test conditions, statistical considerations, and functionality testing (pre-, intermediate- and post-test checks).
- Environmental requirements: temperature ranges, temperature shock, humidity, moisture/dust protection, and low/high temperature start-up.
- Mechanical requirements: vibration, mechanical shock, impact (microphonics) and related test methods.
- Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC): electrostatic discharge (ESD), radio-frequency immunity and emissions, conducted disturbances, and magnetic field effects.
- Electrical, safety and power: battery performance and power-supply tests.
- Documentation: operation and maintenance manual, test certificate and declaration of conformity.
The standard includes detailed methods of test and revised acceptance criteria for environmental identification tests to ensure consistent, repeatable evaluation.
Practical Applications and Users
IEC 62327 is used to ensure hand-held radiation instruments meet robust, repeatable performance and safety criteria. Typical users and stakeholders include:
- Manufacturers designing and certifying RIDs and hand-held survey meters.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing performance and environmental testing.
- Procurement teams in utilities, hospitals, nuclear facilities, and security agencies evaluating instrument specifications.
- Radiation protection officers, emergency responders, customs and border security personnel who rely on accurate detection/identification and dose-rate estimation in operational contexts.
- Regulators and standardization bodies referencing performance baselines.
Related Standards (if applicable)
IEC 62327 aligns with other IEC/ISO standards on radiation detection and EMC. Users should consult referenced normative documents and standards for illicit trafficking detection and complementary instrument requirements when procuring or testing RIDs.
