IEC 62481-4:2017(E) specifies DLNA guidelines for DRM Interoperability Solutions (DIS), which are defined as methods to enable the secure transfer and use of protected commercial content between different implementations on network media devices. This content could be protected by different content protection technologies. In this document, they are referred to as DRMs. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2014. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) removal of references to Mobile Digital Media Uploader (M-DMU); b) removal of references to Mobile Digital Media Downloader (M-DMD).
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62481-4:2017 is Part 4 of the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) home networked device interoperability guidelines. It specifies guidelines for DRM Interoperability Solutions (DIS) - methods that enable secure transfer and use of commercially protected content between different implementations on network media devices. This second edition (2017) is a technical revision of the 2014 edition and removes references to Mobile Digital Media Uploader (M‑DMU) and Mobile Digital Media Downloader (M‑DMD).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and purpose: Defines DLNA guidelines to allow protected content to be transferred and used across home network devices while preserving content protection (referred to generically as DRMs).
- DTCP‑IP DIS: The document provides guidance specifically for DTCP‑IP as a DLNA DIS technology. DTCP‑IP DIS supports Copy and Move functionality and the Upload/Download and Synchronization system usages.
- Media management: Extensions to DLNA media management flags (MM/CP primary‑flags) are defined for DIS; for example Bit 13 is specified as the DIS‑DTCP‑copy flag. Bits 31–14 follow existing definitions in IEC 62481‑1‑1:2017.
- Media transport and profiling: The guidelines cover media transport behavior, DTCP profiling, and DTCP‑IP DIS requirements (including behavior explanations and example sequences in Annex A).
- Interoperability focus: The guidelines are intended to complement-not replace-other mechanisms such as DLNA Link Protection (IEC 62481‑3:2017) or protections provided by individual DRM systems.
Practical applications
- Ensuring secure, interoperable transfer of DRM‑protected photos, music, and video between TVs, set‑top boxes, media servers, mobile devices, and PCs on the home network.
- Implementing Copy/Move workflows (e.g., downloading protected content from a media server to a playback device) while preserving rights and protections.
- Extending device media management metadata and flags so devices correctly indicate and honor DRM transfer capabilities.
- Providing manufacturers and software developers with a standardised approach to integrate DTCP‑IP DIS for cross‑vendor DRM interoperability in consumer electronics and smart home ecosystems.
Who should use this standard
- Consumer electronics manufacturers (TVs, media players, NAS)
- Firmware and OS developers for media devices
- DRM solution providers and integrators
- Networked media application developers and system architects
- Certification bodies and test labs validating DLNA/DRM interoperability
