IEC 62507-1:2010 specifies basic requirements for systems for the identification of objects (such as products, "items", documents, etc., excluding human individuals). It focuses on assigning identifiers to an object for referencing purposes. It includes recommendations for the human readable presentation of identifiers and its machine readable representation, to be considered when constructing the identifiers and identification numbers and also requirements for the application of identifiers in a computer sensible form in accordance with such systems, and requirements for their interchange. It has the status of a horizontal standard in accordance with IEC Guide 108.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62507-1:2010 provides essential principles and requirements for identification systems that support unambiguous information interchange across a variety of domains. Created by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard outlines the foundational methods for assigning identifiers to objects-such as products, items, and documents-for effective referencing, traceability, and information management. IEC 62507-1 emphasizes both the human-readable and machine-readable formats necessary for successful implementation in digital and physical environments. As a horizontal standard, it serves as a base reference across multiple sectors as defined by IEC Guide 108.
Key Topics
- Unambiguous Identification: Establishes criteria to ensure that identification numbers assigned to objects are unique within a defined domain, supporting accurate reference and traceability.
- Domain-based Identification: Requires that identifiers are unique within their specific domain, which may be an organization, system, country, or sub-division.
- Permanence and Stability: Sets out rules to ensure identification numbers remain stable over time, irrespective of organizational changes or system migrations.
- Identification Schemes: Recommends the structure and construction of identifiers, including methods for assigning serial numbers, batch numbers, and version control.
- Human and Machine Readability: Provides guidance on presenting identifiers so they can be readily interpreted by both people and computer systems.
- Management of Changes: Addresses procedures for handling modifications to identified objects without losing traceability or consistency.
- Supporting Documentation: Stresses the importance of documenting identification systems so that metadata and associated information can always be retrieved.
- Interchange Requirements: Specifies the criteria for the electronic interchange of identifiers, promoting compatibility across information systems.
Applications
IEC 62507-1:2010 is highly relevant in environments where clear and reliable object identification underpins product lifecycle management, asset tracking, and information exchange. Key application areas include:
- Manufacturing and Supply Chain: Enables robust part, batch, and product identification systems that support global logistics, inventory control, and product traceability.
- Document Management: Offers frameworks for assigning identifiers to documents for improved retrieval, reference, and version control within enterprises.
- Asset Management: Facilitates the unique identification and tracking of critical assets in industrial plants, IT systems, and facility operations.
- Trade and Logistics: Supports international trade by enabling unambiguous identification of trade items, packages, transport units, and certifications.
- Information Systems Integration: Ensures compatibility of identification numbers when exchanging data between disparate computer systems or between organizations.
- Long-term Information Preservation: Promotes permanence in identification so that records and references remain meaningful, even across decades.
Related Standards
IEC 62507-1:2010 references and aligns with key international standards that add detail to identification and data interchange processes, including:
