Overview
IEC 62541-7:2025 - OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) Part 7: Profiles specifies the value and structural model for OPC UA Profiles. The standard defines how features are grouped for conformance and testing, the categories of TestCases that can be applied, and rules for profile definitions and versioning. This fourth edition (2025) is a technical revision of the 2020 edition and clarifies that Profiles and ConformanceUnits are managed in a public database (see Clause 1); the document itself no longer contains those lists.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Profile model - structure, conventions and versioning for OPC UA Profiles and how they map to functionality.
- ConformanceUnits & ConformanceGroups - how features are partitioned for testing and conformance reporting.
- Profile categories - Application, Server, Client, Publisher, Subscriber, Transport, Security, Global Directory Service, etc.
- Profile conformance - rules and semantics for claiming conformance to profiles (most OPC UA applications will conform to several profiles).
- Service and functionality coverage - address space model, base services, discovery, sessions, subscriptions, monitored items, methods, node management, auditing, redundancy, protocol/encoding, security (tokens, algorithms), PubSub, historical access, alarms & conditions, aggregates, GDS, SKS and more (as reflected in the standard’s clause structure).
- Testing scope - defines what functionality can be tested and the general categories of TestCases; the creation of specific TestCases is outside the scope of this document.
- Public database management - Profiles and ConformanceUnits are maintained in a public database rather than embedded in the standard text.
Practical Applications
- Ensures consistent conformance testing and interoperability across OPC UA products (servers, clients, publishers, subscribers).
- Guides product developers in designing features to map to standardized profiles for certification.
- Supports test labs, certification bodies and QA teams for planning and interpreting conformance results.
- Helps system integrators select components whose profile conformance matches project requirements (security, PubSub, historical access, alarms).
- Useful for product managers and architects when scoping device or software implementations to target profiles.
Who Should Use This Standard
- OPC UA product developers and implementers
- Test laboratories and certification authorities
- System integrators and OT/IT architects
- Vendors preparing product declarations or conformance statements
