Overview
IEC 62722-2-1:2023 - "Luminaire performance – Part 2-1: Particular requirements – LED luminaires" is the international performance standard that specifies test methods, conditions and performance requirements for LED luminaires used in general lighting. This second edition (2023) replaces the 2014 edition and is a technical revision that clarifies temperature requirements for maintenance testing, aligns requirements with IEC 62717 (LED modules), and introduces a new Annex C on methods to calculate and measure parameters for extending electrical and photometric data.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Applies to LED luminaires for general lighting; semi-luminaires and luminaires designed for LED lamps (covered by IEC 62722-1) are excluded.
- Test conditions and types: Defines general test conditions and distinguishes luminaires using LED modules proven to comply with IEC 62717 (Type A) from those that are not (Type B).
- Electrical performance: Input power measurement procedures and electrical characteristics required for compliance.
- Photometric performance: Measurement and reporting of luminous flux, luminous intensity distribution, peak intensity, beam angle, and luminaire luminous efficacy.
- Colour metrics: Tests and reporting for chromaticity coordinates, correlated colour temperature (CCT) and colour rendering (CRI).
- Lifetime and reliability: Requirements for lumen maintenance, endurance tests, and clarification of temperature requirements for the maintenance test (see Clause 10 and Annex A).
- Verification and sampling: Procedures for verification testing and guidance on sample sizes and performance criteria.
- Annexes:
- Annex A: Measurement methods of LED luminaire characteristics.
- Annex B: Explanation of recommended lifetime metrics.
- Annex C (new): Methods for calculation and measurement to extend electrical and photometric data (e.g., different drive currents, binning variations, alternative controlgear).
Practical applications
- Product development and R&D: Use IEC 62722-2-1 to design LED luminaires that meet international performance expectations for efficacy, colour, and lifetime.
- Compliance testing and certification: Test laboratories and certification bodies use the standard’s test methods to validate manufacturer claims.
- Specification and procurement: Lighting designers, specifiers, and procurement teams reference standard-compliant photometric and electrical data when selecting luminaires for projects.
- Datasheets and marketing: Manufacturers rely on standardized test procedures to produce reliable performance data (flux, CCT, CRI, lumen maintenance) for datasheets and warranties.
