Overview
IEC SRD 63426:2024 - Reference standards portfolio (RSP) on interoperability and connectivity for active assisted living (AAL) in the connected home environment (CHE) classifies and maps the elements and concrete examples (instances) used in AAL connected homes. Its primary purpose is to provide a consolidated reference of standards, specifications and protocols that support interoperability and connectivity across AAL devices, gateways, applications/services and information systems.
Key topics
- Classification of AAL CHE elements and instances
- Defines an element as a sub-component of an AAL CHE system component (e.g., personal health devices, multimedia devices, comfort devices, AAL robots) and an instance as a specific example (e.g., glucose meter, thermometer, TV).
- Communication and connectivity domains (organized in Clause 5)
- Device ↔ Gateway (including categories such as personal health devices, multimedia, comfort devices, robots)
- Device ↔ Backend systems
- Gateway ↔ Applications/Services
- Applications/Services ↔ Information systems
- Interoperability focus
- Identifies relevant standards and protocols that enable data exchange, device integration and system-level interaction in the CHE. Clause 5 lists applicable standards, noting that some entries are specifications or protocols rather than formal International Standards.
- Scope and audience
- Framework intended for device and system vendors, service providers and AAL stakeholders seeking guidance on connectivity and standards mapping.
Practical applications
- System and device design - Use the RSP to select standards that ensure devices (PHDs, multimedia, comfort appliances, robots) interoperate with AAL gateways and back-end services.
- Integration and procurement - Assist integrators and purchasers in validating compatibility and specifying interfaces for AAL solutions.
- Service development - Inform developers of personalized health management, telemonitoring, assistive living, video conferencing and other AAL services about required communications paths and standards.
- Standards planning - Help standards committees and manufacturers identify gaps and new standardization opportunities for the connected home AAL domain.
Who should use this standard
- AAL system and device vendors
- Healthcare and assisted-living service providers
- System integrators and software developers for CHE solutions
- Standards bodies and researchers working on AAL interoperability
