IEC TR 61292-9:2017(E) which is a Technical Report, focuses on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), especially the specific features and measurement of gain and polarization dependent gain (PDG). In this document, only the amplifying application of SOAs is described. Other applications, such as modulation, switching and non-linear functions, are not covered. Potential applications of SOAs, however, such as reflective SOAs (RSOAs) for the seeded wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON), are briefly reviewed in Annex A. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2013. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) addition of new terms; b) clarification of noise figure definition. Keywords: semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), gain and polarization dependent gain (PDG)
Abstract
Overview
IEC TR 61292-9:2017 is a Technical Report from the IEC that focuses on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) - specifically their amplifying application, characteristic features and measurement methods for gain and polarization dependent gain (PDG). This second edition (2017) replaces the 2013 version and introduces new terms and a clarified definition of noise figure (NF). The report excludes non-amplifying uses (modulation, switching, nonlinear functions) but briefly reviews potential uses such as reflective SOAs (RSOAs) for seeded WDM‑PON in Annex A.
Key Topics
- Specific SOA features
- Structure and distinctions between SOA chip and SOA module
- Gain ripple and its origin (optical feedback, chip/layout factors)
- Polarization dependent gain (PDG) and polarization‑insensitive designs
- Noise figure (NF) and lifetime of carriers
- Nonlinear effects affecting performance
- Measurement and test methods
- Recommended measurement setups for output power and PDG (for both chips and fiber-pigtailed modules)
- Guidance on using narrow‑band vs broadband light sources
- Typical test components and procedures (polarization control, optical power meters, band‑pass filtering and example measurement traces)
- Illustrative measurement examples and spectra showing gain and PDG behaviour
- Terminology
- New and clarified terms relevant to SOAs, ensuring consistent usage across test reports and standards
Applications and who uses this standard
IEC TR 61292-9 is primarily of practical value to:
- SOA manufacturers - for defining and testing gain, PDG and NF during device development and module packaging
- Test laboratories and QA teams - to implement recommended measurement setups and reproduce consistent results
- System designers and network engineers - assessing SOA suitability for applications such as GPON reach extenders, 100 Gbit Ethernet pre-amplifiers and WDM‑PON with RSOAs
- Standards developers and integrators - aligning component-level specifications with system requirements Practical applications discussed include SOA use as pre-/post-amplifiers in transceivers, reach extenders in passive optical networks, and considerations for monolithic integration.
