Overview
IEC TR 62453-51-10:2017 - Field device tool (FDT) interface specification - Part 51-10: Communication implementation for common object model – IEC 61784 CPF 1 is a Technical Report that provides protocol-specific guidance for integrating the FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus (FF) protocol into the COM-based implementation of the FDT Specification (see IEC TR 62453-41). It describes communication definitions, protocol extensions and how blocks (transducer, resource or function blocks) are represented for FDT/DTM based engineering systems. This edition updates methods for accessing instance and device data and revises the XML schemas.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Communication definitions and protocol-specific extensions for FF (H1 and HSE).
- Block representation: guidance on mapping FF transducer, resource and function blocks into the FDT common object model.
- Access to instance and device data: updated methods and access patterns (see Clause 5).
- XML schema updates: revised protocol-specific data type and schema definitions (Clauses 7–11) including communication, network management and device identification schemas.
- Network and communication data types: H1/HSE management and communication schemas, FMS communication, standard block communication and channel parameter definitions.
- Device identification & topology scan: data types and schemas for device type identification, scan for devices/blocks and XSLT transformations to support engineering tools.
- Compatibility and scope: protocol-specific definitions are aligned with FF specifications and intended to be used with IEC 62453-301 and IEC TR 62453-41. This document replaces IEC TR 62453-501 (2009).
Practical applications and who uses it
This Technical Report is targeted at professionals involved in automation and process control system integration:
- DTM developers and device vendors implementing FDT components for FOUNDATION Fieldbus devices.
- System integrators and control system engineers who need consistent, interoperable interfaces between engineering tools and field devices.
- Automation suppliers and OEMs building asset management, engineering and configuration tools that support FF H1/HSE networks.
- Software architects mapping FF protocol elements into the FDT common object model and maintaining XML schemas used for device configuration and discovery.
Benefits include streamlined integration of FF devices into heterogeneous control systems, standardized access to device/block data, and improved interoperability across multi-vendor environments.
