IEC/TR 62632:2013(E), which is a technical report, describes a variety of nanoscale contacts and nano-interconnects used in research and development and in present-day products. The intent of this technical report is to identify nanoscale contacts and nano-interconnects that will be common in products, to describe the state-of-the-art and to describe some key features and issues related to these contacts. In particular, the following aspects are discussed for each of the nanoscale contacts or nano-interconnects listed: - type and configuration of the nanoscale contacts and interconnects formed; - requirements of the nanoscale contacts and interconnects in products; - fabrication technologies, processes, and process controls used to make the nanoscale contacts and interconnects; - characterization techniques used to quantify nanoscale contacts and nano-interconnects; - functionality and performance of nanoscale contacts and interconnects; - reliability of the nanoscale contacts and interconnects in products; - and expectations of when the product and the associated nanoscale contacts will reach the market. This technical report points out the positive and negative characteristics of the nanoscale contacts and interconnects in each technology or nanomaterial discussed. This information may be helpful to product designers and researchers in their efforts to bring other nano-enabled products to the market. Recommendations for the formation and use of nanoscale contacts and interconnects are also indicated. Key words: nanotechnology, nanocontact, nano-contact
Abstract
Overview
IEC TR 62632:2013 - Nanoscale electrical contacts and interconnects is a technical report from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC TC 113) that surveys the state-of-the-art of nanoscale electrical contacts and nano-interconnects used in R&D and current products. The report identifies common nanoscale contact types (nanotubes, nanowires, graphene, organic and magnetic nanoscale contacts, etc.), describes their key features, and highlights fabrication, characterization, performance, reliability, and market readiness considerations. It also provides recommendations to support product designers and researchers developing nano-enabled products.
Key topics
- Types and configurations of nanoscale contacts and interconnects (e.g., nanotubes, nanowires, CNT/CNF vias and surface interconnects, graphene contacts, organic devices, magnetic contacts).
- Product requirements for nanoscale contacts, including functional and interface expectations.
- Fabrication technologies and process controls used to make nanoscale contacts and interconnects.
- Characterization techniques to quantify nanoscale contacts (electrical, morphological and reliability testing approaches are discussed).
- Functionality and performance metrics at the nanoscale and their implications for device behavior.
- Reliability and durability issues affecting yield and long-term performance in products.
- Market readiness: assessments of when particular nanoscale contact technologies are expected to reach commercialization.
- Recommendations for formation and use to accelerate commercialization and standardization.
Applications
IEC TR 62632 is practical for:
- Product designers and engineers integrating nano-electrotechnical subassemblies into electronic, optical, or magnetic systems.
- R&D teams developing nanotube, nanowire, graphene or organic nano-contacts and interconnects.
- Manufacturers and process engineers working on fabrication, process control and yield improvement for nano-enabled products.
- Testing and metrology labs establishing measurement methods and characterization protocols.
- Standards developers and policy makers needing a technology-neutral overview to guide further standardization work.
Practical use-cases include interconnects in advanced ICs, nanoscale electrodes for sensors and optoelectronics, CNT-based via fills, graphene contacts for high-speed devices, and reliability assessment of nanoscale interfaces.
Related standards / context
- Prepared by IEC Technical Committee 113 (Nanotechnology standardization for electrical and electronic products and systems), IEC TR 62632 complements other IEC nanotechnology activities and provides a technology-neutral foundation for future measurement and product standards.
