IEC TR 63037:2016(E) specifies the electrical interface between phase-cut dimming equipment and lighting equipment, such as LED integrated lamps and light sources with external controlgear, with the intention of helping designers of both types of equipment to develop products that will work together properly. This document describes both the dimming phase and the off phase. In addition to the specification of the interface, test procedures are given for testing the proper operation. It may be expected that controlgear fulfilling the requirements of this document are also suited to be used with electronic switches that use a circuitry comparable with that of a phase-cut dimmer, but do not contain means for the adjustability of the phase-cut angle. Safety requirements are not covered by this document, but by respective product standards.
Abstract
Overview
IEC TR 63037:2016 - Electrical interface specifications for self ballasted lamps and controlgear in phase-cut dimmed lighting systems - defines the electrical interface and test procedures that ensure interoperability between phase-cut dimmers and lighting equipment such as LED integrated lamps and external controlgear. The Technical Report covers both the dimming (on) phase and the off phase, and helps manufacturers design products that work together reliably in phase-cut dimmed lighting systems. Safety requirements are not included and remain the responsibility of respective product standards.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Electrical interface specification: Defines how phase-cut dimming equipment and lamps/controlgear interact electrically during dimming and off states to promote compatibility.
- Dimming methods covered: Addresses both leading-edge and trailing-edge phase-cut dimming methods and their timing/behavior.
- On-state and off-state behavior: Specifies expected electrical characteristics during the conducting (on) phase and the non-conducting (off) phase of phase-cut operation.
- Test procedures: Provides standardized tests for:
- conducting-phase performance,
- transition behavior between conducting and non-conducting phases,
- non-conducting (electronic off) state performance.
- Waveform and test parameters: Includes guidance on voltage waveforms and parameters for reproducible laboratory testing (see informative annexes on voltage shapes).
- Applicability to electronic switches: Indicates suitability of compliant controlgear for use with electronic switches that employ similar circuitry to a phase-cut dimmer.
- Scope exclusions: Explicitly excludes safety requirements - these are handled by product-specific standards.
Practical Applications and Who Uses This Standard
- LED lamp and luminaire manufacturers: to design self-ballasted lamps and external controlgear that are compatible with common phase-cut dimmers.
- Dimmer and controlgear designers: to ensure their devices present acceptable electrical interfaces to LED loads.
- Test laboratories and compliance teams: to validate interoperability and perform the standardized tests described in the report.
- Lighting specifiers, system integrators, and OEMs: to select compatible lamp-dimmer combinations and reduce field failures or flicker issues.
- Smart lighting and retrofit projects: to ensure legacy phase-cut dimmers work reliably with modern LED lighting products.
Related Standards
- IEC TR 63036 - companion document with technical requirements and testing methods for phase-cut dimmers.
- Refer to applicable product safety standards for lamp and controlgear safety requirements (not covered in IEC TR 63037).
By following IEC TR 63037:2016 guidance on phase-cut dimming interfaces, manufacturers and integrators can improve interoperability, reduce flicker and misbehavior, and accelerate reliable deployment of LED lighting in dimmable installations.
