IEC TS 61200-102:2020(E) applies to low-voltage DC electrical installations entirely supplied by local power sources and having a nominal voltage lower or equal to the low-voltage limit. These installations can be connected to collective or shared private electrical installations. This document also applies to DC installations according to use cases TIER 2 and TIER 3 of the World Bank defined in ESMAP 008/15 report: Beyond Connections Energy Access Redefined
Abstract
Overview
IEC TS 61200-102:2020 is a Technical Specification that provides application guidelines for low-voltage direct current (DC) electrical installations that are entirely supplied by local power sources and are not intended to be connected to a public distribution network. It covers installations with nominal voltages at or below the low-voltage limit and includes individual, collective and shared private installations. The TS explicitly addresses off‑grid and distributed renewable-energy systems and references World Bank ESMAP TIER 2 and TIER 3 use cases (ESMAP 008/15).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and concepts: definition of DC low‑voltage installations, architecture and operating modes (direct feeding, reverse feeding, autonomous).
- Local power sources: guidance for photovoltaic, wind, batteries and other local supplies and their integration.
- Loads and nominal voltages: preferred nominal DC voltages and limits for minimum/maximum values.
- Wiring systems: selection and erection of conductors, cross‑sectional areas, conductor and terminal identification (colour coding and marking).
- Earthing and protective conductors: earthing arrangements, direction of touch current, and requirements for protective and earthing conductors in DC systems.
- Protection for safety:
- Protection against electric shock (basic and fault protection measures).
- Protection against thermal effects including arc fault considerations and battery explosion risks.
- Overcurrent protection (overload and short‑circuit protection).
- Protection against overvoltage.
- Inspection and maintenance: provisions for initial and periodic inspection of DC installations.
- Annexes and practical guidance: architecture examples (individual/collective/shared), cable length/voltage‑drop limitation methods, and country‑specific notes.
Practical applications
IEC TS 61200-102 is directly applicable to:
- Off‑grid and microgrid installations supplied by renewable energy (solar home systems, small wind + battery systems).
- Shared or collective DC power systems in remote or rural electrification projects (aligns with World Bank TIER 2/3 scenarios).
- Standalone DC supply installations for lighting (LED), telecom charging, appliances and prosumer setups.
This TS helps designers, electrical installers, system integrators and project planners implement safe, standardized low‑voltage DC systems that prioritize protection, correct wiring practice and maintainability.
Who should use this standard
- Electrical designers and consultants working on off‑grid or microgrid DC projects
- Installers and contractors implementing low‑voltage DC wiring and earthing
- Manufacturers and integrators of DC power systems and battery storage
- NGOs, utilities and development agencies planning rural electrification (World Bank/ESMAP contexts)
- Inspectors and regulatory authorities assessing DC installations for safety and conformity
