IEC 61340-5-4:2026 describes compliance verification testing for technical items included in ESD control programs, such as those specified in IEC 61340-5-1. Test methods are based on those specified in IEC 61340-5-1 and other parts of the IEC 61340 series and are simplified, where appropriate, for the purposes of compliance verification. This document describes compliance verification procedures intended for use by competent personnel familiar with the operation of test equipment and knowledgeable about the ESD control items being verified. Organizations can, by reference to this document in their compliance verification plan, adopt the necessary compliance verification procedures described herein without change or addition. Alternatively, compliance verification procedures described in this document can be adapted to match the organization's ESD control program requirements, provided deviations in test equipment and compliance verification procedures are documented in their compliance verification plan. Product qualification is excluded from the scope of this document. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) significant new revision; b) document has been updated and reformatted.
Abstract
Overview
IEC TS 61340-5-4:2026 is a key technical specification published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on the protection of electronic devices from electrostatic phenomena through compliance verification. Designed to be used within Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) control programs-such as those specified in IEC 61340-5-1-this standard details effective verification procedures for equipment and systems intended to minimize ESD risks in operational environments.
Compliance verification is crucial for ensuring that ESD control measures remain effective throughout their operational life. Unlike qualification testing, which is typically performed under controlled laboratory conditions, compliance verification testing is conducted in the work environment, using simpler and often non-destructive methods. This helps organizations continually assess and maintain the reliability and effectiveness of their ESD protection strategies.
Key Topics
IEC TS 61340-5-4:2026 covers a range of important subjects that are central to ESD compliance verification in the workplace:
- Scope & Purpose: Describes compliance verification for ESD control items included in an organization’s ESD control program, focusing on operational testing.
- Test Methods: Outlines simplified test methods, based primarily on IEC 61340-5-1 and related standards within the IEC 61340 series, to ensure practical, in-use verification.
- Test Equipment: Defines requirements and guidelines for test instruments (e.g., resistance meters, electrostatic field meters, voltmeters), including their selection, calibration, and use.
- ESD Control Item Verification: Details procedures for checking grounding/bonding systems, personnel grounding methods (e.g., wrist straps, footwear), ESD protected areas, static control garments, ionization, seating, and packaging materials.
- Personnel Competence: Stresses that verification activities should be carried out by individuals familiar with the operation of the relevant test equipment and well-versed in ESD control principles.
- Documentation & Customization: Allows organizations to reference the standard directly within their compliance plans, or to adapt the procedures as needed, provided any deviations are thoroughly documented.
- Troubleshooting Guidance: Provides practical advice for identifying and resolving issues discovered during compliance verification activities.
Applications
The practical applications of IEC TS 61340-5-4:2026 make it essential for any organization handling sensitive electronic components. Typical use cases include:
- Electronics Manufacturing and Assembly: Regular verification of ESD controls within production lines, assembly stations, and test labs.
- Maintenance of ESD Protected Areas (EPAs): Ongoing checks to ensure EPA infrastructure-including work surfaces, storage solutions, and personnel grounding systems-remains within required parameters.
- Quality and Compliance Management: Supporting internal audits or third-party inspections by providing standardized and recognized ESD compliance verification methodologies.
- Training and Competence Development: Guiding ESD coordinators and technical staff on correct procedures for operational compliance verification.
- ESD Safe Packaging Validation: Verifying that packaging materials meet resistance and shielding requirements to protect components during storage and transit.
By following this technical specification, organizations can proactively manage their ESD control program, significantly reducing the risk of electrostatic damage to sensitive devices, and ensuring ongoing compliance with industry best practices.
Related Standards
For comprehensive ESD control and management, the following IEC standards and technical reports are closely linked to IEC TS 61340-5-4:2026:
