Overview
IEC TS 62453-53-31:2025 is a Technical Specification that defines the communication implementation for integrating PROFIBUS technology into the CLI- and HTML-based implementations of the FDT (Field Device Tool) Interface Specification (see IEC TS 62453-43). It specifies communication and supporting services based on IEC 62453‑303‑1, and documents protocol-specific datatypes, message structures and device models for PROFIBUS (CP 3/1 and CP 3/2). This TS complements the FDT ecosystem but does not replace or modify the core FDT specification.
Key topics and technical requirements
- PROFIBUS integration into FDT: Defines how PROFIBUS devices and services are exposed through the FDT CLI/HTML interface for tool interoperability.
- Mapping of datatypes: Rules for mapping PROFIBUS datatypes to FDT datatypes (see mapping tables and SemanticInfo usage).
- Protocol-specific behaviour: PROFIBUS device model, configuration/parameterization approaches for monolithic and modular devices, and handling of devices without a class 1 master.
- DP-V0 and DP-V1 communication: Detailed message and datatype definitions (connect, disconnect, transaction, read/write, abort) for DP‑V0 and DP‑V1 operations, including availability of master services.
- Network and process data: Definitions for PROFIBUS Network Data (PND), process data items (ProfibusIOSignalInfo), and error/abort messages.
- Device identification & GSD: Datatypes and semantics for device scan and identification (ProfibusDeviceScanInfo, ProfibusDeviceIdentInfo), and handling of GSD file information and language mappings.
- CLI and HTML interface specifics: Guidance for implementing communication services in CLI-based (and HTML-based) FDT implementations.
Practical applications and users
Who benefits:
- DTM/Software developers implementing FDT Device Type Managers that support PROFIBUS using CLI/HTML transports.
- System integrators and OEMs integrating PROFIBUS field devices into FDT-based asset management and engineering tools.
- Automation engineers needing standardized access to PROFIBUS process, configuration and diagnostic data via FDT tools.
- Vendor product teams creating PROFIBUS-enabled instrumentation, actuators and gateways to ensure predictable behavior within FDT ecosystems.
Real-world uses:
- Enabling standardized command/response and read/write operations between FDT host tools and PROFIBUS devices.
- Exchanging process and diagnostic data with SCADA, DCS or asset management systems via FDT.
- Implementing consistent device discovery, parameterization and GSD handling across vendors.
