Abstract
Overview
ISO 10115:2013 - Essential oil of tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L.) - specifies characteristics and test criteria to facilitate quality assessment of tarragon essential oil. This second edition defines sensory, physicochemical and chromatographic requirements, sampling guidance and references to standard test methods used for routine quality control, trading and regulatory compliance.
Key topics and requirements
- Appearance & odour: Mobile, clear liquid; colourless to pale yellow; characteristic aniseed-like odour.
- Physicochemical limits:
- Relative density (20 °C): 0.918 – 0.950 (measured per ISO 279).
- Refractive index (20 °C): 1.508 – 1.518 (ISO 280).
- Optical rotation (20 °C): +2° to +6° (ISO 592).
- Miscibility: 1 volume oil must form a clear solution with no more than 4 volumes of 90 % ethanol at 20 °C (ISO 875).
- Acid value: Maximum 1 (ISO 1242).
