This document gives requirements specific to tower cranes for limiting and indicating devices. It is applicable to tower cranes as defined in ISO 4306‑3. It is not applicable to end stops such as buffers used to stop trolleying, travelling or luffing movements, nor to erection, dismantling operations or the changing of a crane's configuration. NOTE General requirements for the devices are given in ISO 10245‑1.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10245-3:2019 - "Cranes - Limiting and indicating devices - Part 3: Tower cranes" specifies requirements for limiting and indicating devices specific to tower cranes (as defined in ISO 4306‑3). It complements the general provisions of ISO 10245‑1 and addresses devices such as rated capacity limiters/indicators, motion and performance limiters, anemometers, event recorders/data loggers, and provisions for climbing systems. The standard excludes end stops (buffers), erection/dismantling operations and changes of crane configuration.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applies to tower cranes; not applicable to certain end stops, erection/dismantling or reconfiguration.
- Rated capacity limiters and indicators
- Required for cranes with rated capacity ≥ 1 000 kg or overturning moment ≥ 40 000 N·m.
- Limiters must activate at not more than 110% of rated capacity to allow for dynamic effects.
- Indicators must warn at 90% (approach) and give continuous visual + audible warning at 100%.
- No operator override of rated capacity limiter during normal operation.
- Motion limiters and performance limiters
- Motion limiters: hoisting, lowering, travelling, trolleying, luffing and others per Table 1 (some types optional or conditional).
- Performance limiters: hoisting, lowering and luffing speed limiters where risk of exceeding design speeds exists.
- Secondary (backup) limiters require controlled reset actions not readily available to the operator.
- Indicators and response
- Indicators for actual load, actual radius and maximum allowable radius are recommended; plates on jib also acceptable.
- Response time must be adequate to reflect current conditions.
- Anemometer
- Required for tower cranes except some self‑erecting cranes with height under hook
